American Airlines To Fly To Charleston, SC

Mon Jan 30, 2006 3:16 pm

Expected for a while and now official, American Eagle will begin twice daily Dallas-Charleston, SC service on 3 April 2006:

AA 3507 DFW 1040-1409 CHS ER4
AA 3483 DFW 1740-2110 CHS ER4

AA 3484 CHS 0747-0935 DFW ER4
AA 3508 CHS 1445-1636 DFW ER4

A daily ERD to MIA may be added in July.

This is yet another Southeast market American Eagle has expanded to following Delta's closure of their DFW hub. Other markets added since the closure include Penscaola, Fort Walton Beach, Colombia, Gulfport, Mobile, Lexington, and, most recently, Lafayette, LA and Charleston.

The only remaining market that hasn't recieved service that I can think of right off the top of my head is GTR . Any others I'm missing?

is there any chance of this route being profitable or are they just competing with southwest?

So much for the "doom and gloom" scenarios regarding the Wright Amendment, huh?  Wink

The irony is that some of these destinations only had DFW service for a short period of time before DFW was de-hubbed. So it isn't as if AA is filling an absense of flights after 20 years of service.
It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now.

TLH and MGM has nonstop RJ service to DFW on DL. So there's two more AA could potentially backfill. I would say that TLH is more likely.

I was not aware that Southwest flew to CHS?

What was a complete list of destinations on DL from their old DFW hub?

AA used to fly to MGM from DFW before DL even made DFW a hub.

I'd probably see DFW-MGM service again before TLH.

Great news! I can't say this route is all that surprising, as anyone watching AA's backfill of the former Delta DFW-Southeast routes over the least two years would probably have guessed that CHS' time would come. Charleston is such a wonderful American city -- so pleased to see this service!

I disagree. In fact, Tallahasse is very close to being launched this summer.

My airport gets a new airline! well, sort of, American flew to CHS from the old RDU Hub from 1987 to about 1994 using MD80s and Saab 340s. They can take up the slack left by Independence Air and CHS gets nonstop service to DFW again.

They don't, nor to any other airport in South Carolina.

Great to see new service. What are my choices out of DFW? AA or AA or AA or AA or AA or AA or AA or AA or AA or AA. Oh, I guess I could walk to where ever I need to go.

Two cities that lack DFW service are Monroe, LA and Alexandria, LA, they only have east bound service on Delta, east/midwest on Northwest and Houston to the west on Continental.

Geaux AA !!!

In 1999 or 2000, after Eagle (AA) started an Embraer base at DFW, Eagle started MGM runs, but quit the market after a year or two. Not long after Eagle (AA) started the MGM runs, ASA (DL) started flying DFW to MGM with CRJs. Sorry I don't have a time frame, but it was a few months after ASA (DL) was in the MGM-DFW market that Eagle (AA) pulled out.
See, I knew American Eagle was first class all along!

MGM is a problematic market because of its proximity to BHM. Much of MGM's traffic bleeds over to BHM which has more service and lower fares (thanks to WN). So while MGM could probably support RJ service to DFW, it will be tougher to get because MGM loses so much of its traffic.

TLH loses some traffic to JAX, but not at the same scale. I could see AA flying TLH-DFW 2x daily and maybe later attack DL on the TLH-MIA run. Of course, this is assuming AA has the RJ's to continue their expansion in the Southeast.

ASA pulled out of the TLH-DFW market when the de-hubbed DFW (Last February). For the last few months of the service, it was actually a Skywest flight.
