FAT/BFL-GDL Start Date And Schedule Loaded By MX

Tue Jan 31, 2006 12:27 am

Mexicana has loaded the info for its new Fresno and Bakersfield services operated on A318s. If my checking is correct, first flights will be April 1.

The schedule is:
depart GDL 10:55pm arrive FAT 12:35am
depart FAT 1:35am arrive GDL 7:00am
with service operating T/W/Th/F/S from GDL and W/Th/F/S/S from FAT. Fares start at $189 each way for FAT-GDL.

BFL flights look like
depart GDL 11:15pm arrive 1:00am
depart BFL 2:00am arrive GDL 7:10am
with flights operating W/F/Sat from GDL and Th/S/S from BFL.

Well it's about dang time!

The overnight arr/dep shouldn't be a surprise, but still disappointing....makes it hard to photograph...but nonetheless, great news for the Central Valley!

Have not heard anything on Stockton lately....I am guessing the ball is in the city's court now; getting the ground infrastructure in place before this can move forward.

From the info in another thread and what I hear out of SCK, it looks like they think AM will start SCK late this year.

Personally I wonder if SCK is far enough along for that time line. I don't know where they stand on remodeling/construction for the FIS and the applications for customs staffing. Fresno and Bakersfield have been working on international plans since late 2004. SCK started moving for approvals in about July/Aug 2005.

In my mind, AM should give serious thought to starting FAT and/or BFL flights this summer. Fresno service would allow them to start marketing to much of the north valley before they start SCK.

Its incredible that those mid-night flights work so well for Mexicana. Dropped of my uncle at LAX for a mid-night flight to Mexico, every last seat was taken.

Well, aviation wise I am glad that these flights raise the value of service to the San Joaquin valley. I wonder what it will do to the loads of the Eagle & Express flights taking connecting pax to LAX?

A deeper concern is still Phytosanitary issues on the inbounds? How will Mexicana ensure that NO Med flies hitch a ride in the baggage compartment? Fumigation?

Can APHIS ensure no fruit fly infected fruit is transported into the Valley?

Agriculture and exports of Ag products are 10-15% of the economy in the valley and we cannot risk being shut out of export markets due to Med Flies.

The agricultural lobby in Kern and San Joaquin county agreed to allow the inbound flights from Mexico. One stipulation is that the carriers place warnings and a receptacle to dispose of items that are not allowed at the gate.

Stockton is finalizing architectural designs of the FIS facility and plans to begin construction in Feb/Mar and to operational by July/August. The discussions with CBP are very advanced and should not be a road block. Aeromexico has signed an agreement with SCK to begin service when the facility is finished. AM also has filed with DOT for FAT/BFL but operating agreements with those cities have not been signed.

The proposed schedule is 2200/2300 arrival in SCK with arrival in GDL/MLM 0600/0700 with B737-700. The reason this schedule is so important is that it coincides with the bus schedules to the outlying cities.

This is great news for Stockton. The city is investing in a new transportation hub downtown. Hopefully, there will be service to the airport in the plan.

Thanks Bartolo, I haven't been able to get much lately from the inside and I hadn't seen anything on county board agendas from the area. It was beginning to appear there may be a problem with either the FIS remodeling or CBP.

SCK seems to be going through an interesting period right now.

On the one hand, AM service and other airlines looking at the possibilities.

On the other hand, they are dealing with housing encroachment around the airport. Area growth is pushing the residential builders into the airport area. I remember when there was little around the south and east sides of SCK. Now 2500 homes are proposed.

Thanks for the info FATflyer:

Good Lord, and I wanted to be there for the first flight. I don't think I'd be able to be up that late!

Always a hot seller! MX has two LAX-GDL red-eyes, one at 1:30pm and one at 2:30. and are always packed full. Sometimes they run out of seats so you end up getting upgraded to first class!  Smile It is not unusual to be waiting to clear immigration at GDL if you have taken the 1:30am flight when the 2:30am flight has already arrived. They are so popular, but so hard on the body that at least for me, the concept "flying Internationally" takes full effect on my body as it is inevitable to get jet-lag even if they are just 2:45 minute flight with a two hour time difference.

Now I would have imagined that the arrival times of these flights in GDL would have been MUCH earlier in the morning - say on the order of 4:30 AM, to time connections to the Guadalajara bus station. Granted, there are buses 24/7, but usually the red-eye flights arrive in central Mexican airports at Oh-dark-thirty, as my father used to say.

How is GDL for handling large numbers of international arrivals at one time? As MX and AM begin opening more and more American stations (hey, if you can make BFL work, you can make almost ANYWHERE work!!), the airport is going to have more and more arrivals - they are ready for this, yes?

Best of luck to this new service!!

There are okay-so-so! Like I said in my previous post. The lines get pretty busy to clear immigration in GDL in the early morning hours as that is the time when lots of the California flights arrive. I'd say they are okay. The Mexican immigration officers are still better than the American officers, which tend to be not in the best mood. GDL still gets a much better rating from me than LAX's infamous Tom Bradley, which gets so complicated when you have several 747s from Asia and some flights from Latin America all at the same time. You can imagine or have been in a similar situation when you arrive at the same time that several boat-loads of 744s from Air India, Korean Air, Philippine Airlines, and several Mexicana planes all trying clear immigration. That's L.A. for you, right there!
