Airports With Most O&D Pax

Tue Jan 31, 2006 12:49 pm

I know in the US LAX followed by LAS, ORD, MCO then ATL have the most O&D pax. What about the Europe and Asian airports rundown? Which airport worldwide has the most O&D-Haneda perhaps?

What does O&D stand for, Origin and Destination?

Yes, that is correct. I tried a search but this hasn't been discussed before.

In 2004, LHR was by far the largest O&D airport in Europe, followed by CDG and FRA.

Complete, up-to-date data isn't easy to come by. AirlineData will slice and dice the numbers any way you like it for a cool $12K, or you could get it for free from ACI Europe, with media credentials though.

Generally speaking, European airports with the largest traffic overall also have the largest O&D traffic because they are home to one of Europe's largest carriers, as opposed to the US where it isn't always the case (take LAX, no US carrier has a substantial hub at the airport).

For Asia it might be tricky. Can it be HND?

WN has one of their high-volume "but it's not a hub" operations there.

HND?

Certainly one of the biggest. TPE and HKG are also huge. BKK, obviously.

Probably, but HND is more a domestic hub. I'd say the biggest O&D airport in Asia would probably be SIN (though they have lots of connecting traffic, especially on flights such as the Kangaroo Route to Australia), followed by NRT.

Actually, I'd think if anything, HKG is bigger than SIN. The total pax numbers at HKG is substantially higher. They both get a lot of transfers -- SIN in the way of the Kangaroo route, HKG in the way of China-TPE pax.

How much connecting happens at HND?

All are good answers, but which airport worldwide is #1?
