The Future Of First Class (with Current Pics)

Wed Feb 01, 2006 9:22 pm

So many airlines today have such great First class products, such as seen below, so what on earth can be next ?..
Virgin has an amazing clubhouse and a stand up bar on board (I wonder where they keep the Pianist ..haha) CX has dressing rooms...
What else possible can Airlines try to incorporate into First Class cabins ?
I know with the advent of the A380 numerous possibilities abound especially once VS and EK gets their paws on them...
whats next guys ? Even GF has a sky nanny !!

I believe one of the things planned for the A380 are private bedrooms for those willing to pay more to sleep in private vs. the big comfy chair in First. I've also heard casinos but that wasn't limited to First.

I wonder if they could install shower(s)....After an overnight flight to europe, that is one thing I cannot wait to do. Just a suggestion.

Most people can get grossed out just thinking about what's on their seat.....but showers?! Although these might be a health risk anyways, the airlines would never put them in becuase of turbulence/falling risks and associated liability.....maybe. I might be wrong and some airline will install one this year. Big grin I'm pretty content with just being at a window seat the whole flight. I guess more legroom and good exterior cam views on the PTV's would suite me just fine!

Doesn't China Air, give you your own space on first class. Saw an ad on CNN a few days ago.
It's not just the destination, it's the journey.

Showers would require a lot of water which is heavy and takes up a lot space. I think the showers will remain in the arrivals lounges.

I know this is unlikely because there are health risks to anesthetics, but what about an onboard anesthesiologist: you pass out before takeoff and come to just before landing, spending the whole flight in deep unconsciousness. Something to this effect was featured in _the Fifth Element_.

I know it sounds crazy from an aviation lovers point of view, but I wanted this option for a long time, especially on a redeye flight, long flights, bumpy flights, rude passengers, FA's trying to feed you, carts bumping into you, screaming kids and all. Just put me out and wake me up when we get there. Again this should be only an option.

This could be offered for all classes not just first..
But also one thing I would say regarding this, what if..God forbid..the plane crashed ?? wouldnt you want to be awake/aware ??
Thats a tough one !! Guess it depends what your preferences are..

I personally wonder what on earth SQ are doing ?? they used to be miles ahead of the competition with innovation but lately it seems they have slipped behind CX and EK a bit... (sigh  Sad )

It would be great if the plane is full of 19 year old college female cheerleaders... While they take a shower, I'd bribe the pilot to start shaking the plane and pretend it's a bad turbulance, and ask her to get out of the shower and return to her seat... NOW! NOW! NOW!!!

But it would only be good with 19 year old chics... Don't want to see any 91 year old grandmas running out of the shower naked due to turbulance...

I think the next steps are:
Included in your First Class fare: An amazing tour to the wild and barbarian Economy Class ( don't feed the people please).

A taste of peanuts and pretzels( native delicacies), and incredible stories of passengers travelling for 14 hrs with 30 in legroom!

Also, a dog will bring the morning newspaper to you, and a monkey will Tap dance every 45 minutes for your entertainment.

What are you waiting?

What if they install one of those mist showers. You walk into it fully clothed get hit by a bit of misty water and walk out again takes only 2 litres of water, very refreshing and would only take about a minute.

Personally I'm interested to see what BA come up with...they set the bar in 1996 with the flat bed and are planning on doing a refurb along with Club World later in the year.

Personally I'm not a fan of the ruby studded, gold lined, bling factor of the EK cabin decor, although the concept looks rather good.

VS is offering some deal on the 747s (maybe the A340s too but I'm not sure) where the two middle Upper Class Suites in a row can have the partition removed between them for couple traveling together. Fashion yourself a tent out of that big fluffy comforter plus keep it quiet, and I'm sure you could join as is right now.

When is the last time you saw anything come out of the Gulf region that wasn't bling bling? The BA product will continue to be classy along with the SQ and CX products.

I have had the pleasure to fly the SQ and VS products up front more than once-and let me say, you almost want to ask to go 'round again! A grueling 14 hours becomes a mini vacation! The service on both is impeccable. SQ f/a's stand sentinel at the rear of the cabin, and I will be damned if you simply as much as move a muscle, they are there. Beluga, Dom, cashmere pj's, down comforters and duvet's....breakfast to order...then you land in SFO/LAX to connect to east coast (PHL) and have to deal with US, AA, or UA....talk about being depressed?  Sad

In any case, the future of long haul F/C is at hand, and without a doubt the asian flag, and euro flagged carriers have it spot on over the us flags.
Strange, tho...they do a job this phenomenal-outstanding above all-and believe it or NOT still make a nice profit at it. I often wonder, with this litany of red ink and despair in the US industry surrounding our flag carriers....do any of the CEO's, Arpey, Steenland(sp??), Tilton...do they ever fly any of these foreign carriers?
I'd cry too if I were them, no better yet, quit and go work for the competition.
One has just got to wonder.....as the saying goes "show up, pay attention, learn from your mistakes and move forward!"

Cheers!

I still don't understand the concept of that cheap "mini-bar" in the EK 777-300ER seat. Why would anyone want a warm can of juice, especially if all you have to do is press a button and ask a FA for a chilled glass of the same? It reminds me of a really bad mini-version of something you'd see in a cheap Marriott.

Airlines should probably make their onboard internet free for F passengers.

Some of the J products are so impressive with lie flat seats, that I wonder how many airlines which actually have an F cabin in a few years.

Sure the EK version is a bit more whizz-bang, and has a little more wow factor but then it will be dated so very fast and look extremely tatty a lot faster. The BA version does tend to show scuffs on the suede around the bottom of the seat but on the whole looks a lot more tidy and just more elegant.

If you knew the logistics of supporting just the VS and EK limo services, a small proportion compared to that of BA's J & F customers then you'd think again. I know someone who used to work for Tristar and it was a pretty big operation.

However it would be a great addition to BA service if they could accomodate this for F passengers

Anybody ever seen Soul Plane? There you go.. Seriously though, one of those bathrooms (Lavs) featured on Soul Plane doesn't sound like such a bad idea. Make it something like 10 ft. by 30 ft. if they can fit it. Maybe on such planes as the A380? Put something like 2 urinals and 2 stalls for male bathroom and four stalls for female bathroom, and a line of 3 sinks. And throw in a set of windows for people sitting in the middle to look out of. Man that would be nice. Last time I went in the bathroom on a CRJ-700 I was shocked. Terribly small.
The proper term is "on final" not "on finals" bud...

Greetings from the St Martins Lane in London, a South Beach wannabee...

Real First Class is:

1. Limo Check-In, like VS Upper Class
2. Cabin Crew not based on seniority.
3. No FFs and Non Revs allowed.
4. No Infants
4. Only 747's allowed - nose or upper deck. (also future SSTs)
5. Over The Top cuisine -comfort/boarding school foods not allowed.
6. No antisocial, selfish dine when you will.
7. Bar area for hobnobbing.
8. VIP Customs and Immigration clearance, especially at JFK..
9. Remembering most of Hollywood used to wait tables before their big break...
10. Trolley Service - salivating on the food choices before you deciding.
11. Obligatory caviar service.
12. Absurd F prices, because the F passenger is a beneficiary of absurd compensation...
13. No shower etc because you can do that at an Arrivals Lounge;perhaps special high humidity cabins for our F friends.

This is still a poor second to Concorde, as time is the true luxury for long-haul flying.

Hopefully Dubai will become the hub of future F/R travel, as it seems to be the only place in the world where you can get away from that pesky work ethic, often disguised by code words like 'Discreet', 'Restrained', 'Tasteful' and so on...

Finally, someone is talking sense. Also, kudos to the chap that mentioned slip & fall liabilities.

Casinos will most likely be inseat, on your PTV. Otherwise you are sacrificing floor space for a gambling center that only a few people could use at a time. By allowing everyseat to have gambling, you could theoretically while in international airspace have 555 people pumping additional money into your revenue streams. I don't think this is too far off, but it would have to be held to overfly rules (like no alchohol served over Saudi airpsace, etc...).

I think all First Class's are merging into the same product: Flat bed, "Ottoman", private space etc.

I'd like to see private rooms for First class. It means you can have private conversations and don't have to listen to people who snore, rustle newspapers and move around the cabin all night.

Probably not posible due to emergency exit procedures. Would be nice though.
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

The luxury and comfort levels available for First Class passengers on top notch airlines is already at a maximum taking into account the tight environs of an airplane cabin. I doubt if airlines will introduce private cabins from which egress is hard in an emergency. At most, some level of heightened privacy aka EK's A345 cabins will become de rigeur, but all this nonsense about cabanas, and hot tubs and showers is just plain silly. Most First Class and Business Class passengers want some privacy to work and sleep and to enjoy a decent meal.

I like the idea of the cheerleaders in the shower....

I am not sure about the 19 year old cheerleaders in the shower. I think a hot tub complete with Japanese massage girls a la "You only live twice" on the upper deck of the 747 sounds better. However, the pilots would have to make gentle maneuvers to stop the water from spilling out of the hot tub.

The front of an A346/5 is quite as a tomb too!

Furthermore I agree with you on the real F cabin!

Don't know for the shower but this company is actually looking for A380 Shower and Lavatory Models Designers.

http://www.bishop-gmbh.com/index2.php?con=jobs&lang=en

Also look at the last paragraph of this page :

http://www.shephard.co.uk/Inflight/d...84810f-c696-4e4c-92be-ef6e34944a7a

Quote:
An early project for the centre is an airworthy shower for an unnamed A380 operator. The shower will have a seatbelt-equipped seat located outside the wetted area but inside the private enclosure for use in case of turbulence.

I don't know why but I feel like the unnamed operator is SQ.

Good list!  thumbsup  Out of interest is this a 'dream and never likely to happen' list or in your opinion is it realistic? For example what consists an 'absurd price'? Something like 20K GBP return LHR-LAX-LHR that would undoubtedly price it out of the market?

But no FFs? As in no DL Plat Medallion upgrade certs, AA eVIPs, UA SWUs or BA GUF2s?  Wink Or no FF redemptions? If it were the latter to my airline then I'd change my allegiances!

As for the bar, in a true F class with maybe a dozen seats I doubt the bar would see much action. Maybe in a 48 seat J/F hybrid it'd work. Personally I'd rather see the bar area sacrificed for more personal space at the seat. One of the things that entices me to save for F tickets is the great amount of personal space around the seat that puts J on the shadow.

I notice you mention nothing of the seat/suite/bedroom. Will old park benches suffice?  Wink

As for VIP immmigration this is often dependent on the country of entry not the airline itself.

And in reality does this actually occur? BA invite you to dine as and when you like in First but in reality it doesn't happen. You can eat bacon rolls as and when which may be great when you are drunk!

Also from what I have read and heard about of the VS equivalent in Upper Class the dine at leisure option is not more than hot air.

Seems airlines like to use each-other's first class and business class seats now.
MH has taken TG's
NZ has taken VS's

I know it is not taking, since they would be paying for the licensing.

Are there any others?

Hi all, long time reader, first time poster.

I'm wondering about the suites shown in http://www.airliners.net/open.file/922524/L/ It looks like there is almost a sliding door there which would turn your suite almost into a 'closet'. Is this correct?

I know this is unlikely because there are health risks to anesthetics, but what about an onboard anesthesiologist: you pass out before takeoff and come to just before landing, spending the whole flight in deep unconsciousness

They already have a place for anesthetics on board. It's called the cocktail cart.

The future of first class is that it will disappear as it becomes too extravagant and as Business class gets better and better and longer range and larger boutique charters and private jets come on line. There will only be certain routes with it.

I'm holding out for sleeper cabins. Mini-staterooms where you can shut out the world and just fall into deep slumber for six or seven hours. That would be heavenly.

Regarding the bottom line, I think that there will still be plenty of people who will pay for this kind of experience, particularly on ultra-long haul flights.
