LAX Will Be Ready For World's Largest Passenger Jet

LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles International Airport will be ready when Qantas Airways lands the world's largest passenger jet at LAX next spring, the mayor said Tuesday at the opening of the airline's new maintenance facility.

"I am committed to making sure that LAX is ready when Qantas brings the first A-380 here to Los Angeles. So hold me to that and I'll hold you to that," the mayor said, addressing council members and Airport Commission members in the audience.

The mayor made his comments at the unveiling of Qantas Airways' maintenance facility at LAX.

In anticipation of the airplane's 2007 debut, officials are working to modernize gates at the Tom Bradley International Terminal and make gates "customer friendly," Villaraigosa said.

The city will upgrade baggage handling and security and the mayor vowed to complete the renovation of the south runway "on time and on budget."

The baggage and south runway improvements are expected to cost $1 billion, said Darryl Ryan, Villaraigosa spokesman.

"We'll be ready for you," the mayor told Qantas officials.
