RG Announce New Individual Entertainment System

Thu Feb 02, 2006 10:15 am

Varig announced today thru their website that they will provide effective march/06 a new individual entertainment system for their First Class and Business Class customers.

The PEA - Personal Entertainment Appliance is , as per Varig's information, the most modern interactive individual system available in the market and used only on six other airlines.

RG passengers can see up to 10 different movies (most of them at the same time they are available at brazilian theatres) in 6 different languages. The central unit, similar to a portable computer, uses a 10 hours battery and a widescreen LCD high-resolution screen.

Varig will also offer thru the system:

- 8 Games
- 2 newspapers (daily updated in PDF format: Folha de São Paulo and USA Today)
- 10 Music Channels with CD quality
- 2 hours of short movies (includes Cable TV series, a FIFA soccer history special and videomusics)
- Duty Free Availability on board
- Varig world (shows Varig's History, Fleet & Staff)

Also Varig has just announced they will standardize it's fleet (starting with the 777 Fleet) during 2006.

Seems that they are trying to get back some of their valuable premium passengers.

Anyone knows the PEA and could grant us more info ?

Aloha Felipe!

Perhaps it is the same device that Hawaiian Airlines uses, called a digi-player. It sounds very similar.
I'll be flying Varig Business Class from LAX-GIG next month and I'll let you know how it is.

Is the PEA better than AVOD systems? In what respect? At least KLM AVOD (in my view the best of all carriers) has a huge list of films (about 40 or more), and is much superior to what RG is offering.

Here is KLM's entertainment system for AMS-GRU this month (February):

- Over 80 movies at the touch of your fingertips.
- Hundreds of music tracks.
- Specially created music programmes.
- Create your very own music playlist.
- Kids get their own K:TV channel.
- 20 Games that you can play on your own or with fellow passengers.

Not to mention that KLM entertainmente system is the same for both business and economy class (B777), the only difference is the size of the screen (business class screen is one of the biggest in the industry), and all economy seats also have individual screens...

In addition, you can check all programmes before boarding on:

An AVOD system is generally built into the seat, while the PEA is freestanding. If you have a place to put it, it's great. It is on demand, and you can fast forward, rewind, etc.

So the only advantage is that the system is free standing. Nothing much. On demand, fast forwards, rewind, etc, is all available on AVOD systems as well. Actually, non-self standing system are more convenient for pax since you have where to store the screen whenever you want.

As for RG's new system, sorry to say, but nothing special (simply an ad-hoc solution) and extremelly needed for an airline which needs urgent modernisation.

I agree! But remember, these guys are in dire straits. They can't afford to do anything right now. This is probably the best they can do. I had a DigEPlayer when I flew OAK-OGG on NA last year, and it was great. About 10 movies, some tv shows, music videos, etc. The only problem is that there's no convenient place to put it, especially when the meal comes by. Hopefully RG has a place to put it.

You are totally correct. But they should not fool their passengers stating that this is the most modern interactive individual system available in the market and used only on six other airlines because this is complete absurd.

Agree Hardi, but talking about Brazil not so much airlines keep AVOD systems and many of them does not keep even a PTV.

Agree again, it's probably a smart move due to the high need of such devices on international routes (specially on 767's and M11's). At JFK and MIA routes for example, RG will take advantage against DL and for some flights, AA to MIA.

Also they forget to say it's a copy of AVOD system, but not so confortable.
Varig already keeps 2 B772 with AVOD (PP-VRA and VRB).
