DC-8 Lovers, Old Timers, & OAG Collectors - Help!

Thu Feb 02, 2006 1:04 pm

Can anyone tell me what routes Trans Caribbean Airways (THE original) flew their DC-8s on? Did they serve Boston?

Weird, far out questions - I know - but thanks in advance for your input nonetheless!

I have a Sept 1962 OAG showing DC-8 service between SJU-IDL only. No other mainland city served. You would think they would have served MIA. I also have a Sept 8, 1970 Trans Caribbean Airways schedule and it shows no BOS service. They did serve IAD and EWR by that time but I think with 727-200's not DC-8's (still no MIA, hmmm). Unfortunately, the schedule does not indicate what type of equipment is used. Pictures show DC-8's still operated into JFK in 1970 so we know that. Trans Caribbean also flew non-stop from JFK to AUA, PAP and CUR in 1970. Just don't know if these flights were flown with DC-8's or 727's.

I know they served San Juan. I also recall them flying a charter to LGW in 1970 with a DC-8-61. Trans International acquired one of their -61s and because of the bug infestation that particular DC-8 was dubbed the Roach Coach.

They had a DC-8-61?

When did they merge-- 1970?

Here's a link to the fleet history of Trans Caribbean. Sorry, no route maps & designations served then. Regards.

American bought the carrier in 1971.

Thanks for the link of the fleet. The same site shows the DC-8s in American's fleet. American never operated them though did they?

The day American took over, the DC-8's were replaced by 707's. AA never operated the DC-8. Sort of like when UA took over Capital. The DC-4's and L-049's operated on Capital's last day, June 30, 1961, and were parked.

For what it's worth, I was a student in BOS during the 70's and I distinctly remember, shortly after AA took them over, seeing a Trans Carib DC-8 at the AA gates operating either a scheduled or chtr or xtra section or whatever. but it was there. perhaps this was just part of the transition...

It's funny you mentioned the BOS remark. I have an older book that has a picture of a Trans Caribbean DC-8 and the caption reads "at Boston Logan International Airport". I figured it was just a charter. Nice info! Thanks!

Does this 1962 OAG have airport diagrams? I'm especially interested in the terminal layout of MIA Especially which concourses the airlines had their gates!  airplane  If possible it would be really cool if you could can these diagrams and post on A-Net.
