Boeing: If You Think 05 Was Good, Wait For 06, 07

Thu Feb 02, 2006 8:27 pm

This story just appeared in The News Tribune, a WA state daily. In it, the Boeing Co. boasts increasing deliveries from 290 in 2005 to 445 in 2007. The paper then continues with the rather vague notion that "The company’s new 787 Dreamliner, for instance, last year became the most popular Boeing jetliner ever, measured by precommercial service orders."

Anyway, interesting facts and analysis, even if with a bit too much pro-Boeing bravado. I wonder whether this all is sustainable. Just think about it, less than two years ago B was considered outdone by A. Can it be said that Boeing mastered the post-9/11 surge in aircraft demand?

I think the hook at the begining of this article is slightly misleading. Of course Boeing is going to have more deliveries a few years down the road, they had a ton of new orders last year! The "if you thought 2005 was good..." attack is totally irrelevant. 2005 was a good year based on orders, 2006/07 will be great years for deliveries because of those orders. This isn't to say that Boeing won't be succesful in gaining new orders during this time, but rather to suggest that the author may not understand (or at least acknowledge) the difference between the two. I suppose in the overall "good" of things, yes, 2006/2007 will be better than '05 because Boeing will undoubtedly continue to see new orders come in amidst the deliveries of aircraft ordered last year, but I think the failure of the author to recognize the difference is important.

Yeah, it's really rather misleading as I thought someone in Boeing actually said they expect orders to go up (which is obviously difficult to do) in 06/07.
