BMI Baby Expansion At MAN ??

Fri Feb 03, 2006 8:44 pm

Apart from Perpignan, we haven;t seen any substantial expansion from WW at MAN since they arrived a few years back. Indeed, Paris and Barcelona were dropped after only a short while.

Does anyone think we'll see any more expansion for this lo-co from MAN in the near future?

I think in the next few years WW will get swallowed up by one of the other LCCs or get closed down completely. It depends what happens to BD I suppose. As for the original question I don't think we'll see any expansion from MAN. They might open new routes but this would probably be at the expense of the closure of another MAN route. Baby seem to have a strategy of spreading themselves thinly rather than gaining an uber-large presence at any particular airport. With Jet2, Monarch and even Ryanair expanding at MAN I don't see anywhere for WW to go there.

Maybe with bmi marketing bmibaby "tiny" fares on its own flights then baby could eventually be absorbed back into mainline, rather like Air Canada and Tango?

Baby are hurting ex-MAN in comparison to their other bases - too much low-fare competition in the region. They had the opportunity but didn't move in quickly or agressively enough. I don't believe that there will be too much Baby expansion ex MAN unless things change significantly.

Getting serious again, Bmi Baby doesn't seem to expand that much at any of their bases. A few flights here, the odd one there. No real strength anywhere - look at FR, U2, Jet2, FlyBe, they have some really strong bases where they dominate the LCC traffic - you can't say that about Baby though.

I agree with the point made above - with BMI offering Baby fares, perhaps it will be a matter of time that if and when BMI mainline get their costs down it might disappear like Tango did for Air Canada.

So it's a bit of a 'bottom-dweller'?

it IS the dominant carrier at Cardiff, but when did it last increase services much there, and no one else has seen fit to really make a go of it there. MME - not exactly growing there, and likewise nobdy else is terrribly interested. When it has gone into big airports - like LGW for example, it quickly retreated...

BD and WW will be based at T3 MAN from this spring, so their amalgamation may not be so far fetched.

I'd like to see BCN re-established, leaving BCN at 2230 like it used to...this meant I could have a full business day in BCN flying out ZB and back WW! Now I have to fly out ZB and back U2 in to LPL.

A MAN - BIO service would be a useful oe for my work, too!

I thought the point of baby was as a spolier to Go fly establishing a base at EMA, now FR are there, so it didn't work. BD strategy gone wrong.

Its true that bmibaby seem to go into a base with all guns blazing then don't do anything more... They came to BHX, to everyones surprise with big fanfare. At first, it seemed a very strange discision, but funnily its changed into a good oppurtunity. BHX isn't that great for locos. MyTravelLite have gone. Monarch are there, in competition, but they're relatively new and although expanding could be given a good run for their money. That leaves flyBe. They compete on some routes but generally their network complements baby's. I guess though bmi will leave it up to ZB and BE to sew up whats left.

I flew with baby last week and was impressed with their product. For £50 they got me to AMS and back on time, their aircraft were not half as bad as its been made out on here by certain members. I'd certainly fly them again.

I enjoyed my one and only flight with WW
Apart from being on a boeing not a bus there was little to tell it apart from BD's european service

Maybe BD will tuen everything, long and short haul in to lo-cost and that way WW will fit in perfectly.

Maybe we shall see an expansion with the release of slots from BA?
Prior to that slots have been fairly restrictive.

  • New Route, Manchester > Perpignan, starting 26th March 2006.

It is a route that Rugby fans will find very useful, as supporters can follow their team when they play the Catalan Dragons during the Rugby Super League.

You can read more about this by visiting the news section of the bmibaby website.

  • Latest Aircraft G-TOYG and G-TOYH are now operating in the bmibaby fleet with full colours.

Check the Airliners.net Photo Database for the latest Photographs.
