Sat Feb 04, 2006 2:43 am

According to this article, the A380 will be in Iqaluit in the next few days for cold weather testing, does anyone know when the aircraft will arrive and for how long it'll stay there?

Wow! So, that is the forthcoming visit to Canada...

Any chance that there will be a side trip to Montréal?

... Who will go spotting up north?

The article explains the efforts made to convince Airbus to bring the A380 to Iqaluit.
Without doubting it, I must point out that the A340-600 already came to Iqaluit for the cold soak tests in February 2003, as part of its certification program.

Iqualuit can't be reached by road I don't think.

What will the flightpath be for the A380? maybe it may fly over some major cities enroute to the great north.

Considering current weather conditions, they can do some warm weather testing in YYZ Big grin

But I just checked the temperatures in Iqualit and they are below -20C....so I guess, Airbus will definitely achieve their objective....wonder why they did not select Moscow or some other Russian airport for the cold testing....

While I understand the need to do artic cold testing, at what could be a divesion airport for the A380, When Will It Visit the USA!!!. I don't care if no USA airline will ever buy it, but a hell of lot of Americans will fly on it and major USA airports will be places the A 380 will operate in/out of, so why not check out real airports they will operate at. Besides, I want to see live  biggrin

Hrrm.. wasn't there a rumour last week that the 380 MAY be visiting YUL in early/middle March for proving runs???

I wonder if this visit to Iqaluit could substantiate a visit to YUL???

This would be cool.

But, you're right of course, given that we're having probably one of the warmest winters on record, and a lot of Europe has been in a deep freeze (particularly Russia) - they should do it there.
On the other hand, can't complain if the A380 wants to come to Canada  biggrin

Yakutsk (Siberia) was used at least two times by Airbus:
The A340-300 went to Yakutsk in Feb. 1993.
The A310 did not get a cold soak test until Aeroflot indicated their intention to use the ac. A test was then arranged in March 96 at Yakutsk as well.
The A300 went to Lulea in Sweden but that's may be not cold enough now (it was in Jan. 1978)
But now, Iqaluit seems to be the place of choice.

Yeah, that is what I was thinking. I don't think that the A380 will have any problems taking off though, because it will likely be very light. The article said that Iqaluit had one of the longest runways in Canada. At that length, it is not even close. YYC has over 13000ft.

I believe that Iqaluit (previously Frobisher Bay) has been a USAF base since WW2. Which presumably means a well-maintained runway, first-class maintenance facilities, excellent radar coverage etc. Looks like a very sensible choice.

I'm afraid that's unlikely - unless you count Reykyavik.   The Great Circle route from Europe to Frobisher Bay passes close to Iceland and over Greenland.

Yes, but it's warmer than Yakutsk.... It's -30ºC or so right now at Iqaluit and about -40ºC at Yakutsk.

Yakutsk is the king city when it comes to cold.  Wink

Nav20, you are a little behind. The USAF left Iqaluit over 40 years ago, in 1963. They were a big part of the town's initial set-up, but we've been looking after it for a while now.  Smile

Apologies, Jean Leloup.  Smile

I hope they're sure of having good weather on arrival. I don't know where they'd divert to from there - I doubt that they could put the A380 down at Godthaab! Half-seriously, Gander would probably be the nearest suitable alternate.

It probably should have said in the north. YXY is longest north of 60, then YFB.

Of course. Don't forget YFB is a space shuttle emergency landing site and the airport is only a few feet above sea level with rwy 35 practically backing into Frobisher Bay.

SFJ could handle the 380, same goes for YYR Goose Bay, which is a lot closer than YQX.

It seems that Airbus requires "only" -25ºC, wind chill included, so Iqaluit should be ok.

Perhaps because English is spoken in Canada and not in Russia!

I knew somebody who was on the test team when they went to Siberia - apparently they got all the winter gear free - let's hope the 50 or so going there get the same!

Will it go to KEF for testing? I know the 777 was there for testing in windy conditions. Is it a common airport for aircraft testing or was it just that one? Anyway, there are probably a lot of windy airports...

During flight at high altitudes the ac is obviously working with all systems on.
The cold weather test, or cold soak test, consists in letting a powered out ac cool down at ambient temperature for a number of hours, and then start it up.
A bit like our cars on a freezing morning without any pre-heating.
