Debris On Runway

Sat Feb 04, 2006 8:09 pm

The other day I was reading an accident report about the Concorde crash in Paris. In the report it states that the aircraft ran over a piece of metal that "fell off" an aircraft that departed a few minutes earlier (Continental DC10). As we all know this set off the disastrous chain of events that brought the aircraft down.

What I want to know is do parts fall off planes alot and are there many incidents where those parts have caused damage to other aircraft, like the Concorde example above. Do any pilots or passengers have examples of where they have seen pieces of aircraft on the runway and maybe they caused damage to the aircraft they were on?

Last I heard it was yet to be fully proven that the piece of metal caused the crash of the Concorde. There has been much talk of other problems that lead to the crash. A missing wheel spacer and an engine fuel leak come to mind. I saw a program about a year after the crash that touched on all theories, but have yet to see it again.

Back several years ago a Concorde talking off out of IAD had a tire shred and puncture the wing tank much the same as the Air France crash. I'm not sure if they ever proved how that one occured. Runway FOD is very rare, but not unheard of. It is common for most Airport Operations to scan a runway several times a day and pilots will often report items on the runway.

A random check of Runways is carried out by the Airport Authorities after an Aircraft gets airborne.

Actually, you'll find it has been proven that the metal was the start of the chain of events that led to the accident, although you are right in saying it wasn't the LONE cause.

There are so many things that happened that fateful day, that I doubt the accident would ever have been repeated if Concorde still flew. For example, the metal strip was made from titanium instead of aluminium, the spacer was missing, the wrong engine was shut down, etc etc, there was no 1 single cause.

Re FOD damage causing a crash, I'm certain its happened more than once.
