If you include United Express then in Northern California you have Crescent City (CEC) is one, and Chico (CIC) is another just off the top of my head.

I can tell you the largest city in the United States that was as recently as 1999 had only United Express - Bakersfield, CA (BFL).

At some point in late 1997 or early 1998, American pulled mainline equipment out of BFL, leaving the airport with only American Eagle to LAX three or four times per day, and United Express to LAX and SFO. In early 1999, just before I moved to San Diego, American Eagle announced they were pulling out of BFL completely.

Until early 2000 (I believe) when America West resumed service to BFL, providing four DH8 flights to PHX, BFL was left with only a few EM2 flights per day to LAX and SFO.

It is considered a toss-up as to which exactly is the larger of the two metropolitan areas is bigger - Bakersfield or Stockton. Of very similar size, Stockton is sometimes considered part of the Sacramento metro area. If you go with that statement, then Bakersfield is the largest metropolitan area west of the Mississippi not to have scheduled service to DEN. But like I said, it would be a toss-up with Stockton.

With the scheduled opening of the new airport terminal at BFL (I have pictures but am unable to post them), I am hopeful that in addition to Delta (SkyWest to SLC), USAirways (America West Express - Mesa?) to LAS and PHX, and Continental (Express) to IAH, I would love to see American Eagle return to DFW (that was so successful for so many years!!) and United Express could easily add DEN - they already have United Express and SkyWest already there. And could Horizon do a BFL-PDX or BFL-SEA? I know they are quite successful at FAT...

I don't think that Stockton has any airline service since America West Express pulled out.

Hooters, TMA, and NW are gone, so pretty soon RFD will have only UA Express to DEN.
