US D.O.T.: 2005 Best Airline In America Is...

Sun Feb 05, 2006 9:46 am

Hawaiian Airlines!

According to the year end Air Travel Consumer Report issued by the United States Department Of Transportation, Hawaiian led all US carriers for the second consecutive year in punctuality, baggage handling, and fewest cancellations.
According to the report, 95.1 percent of Hawaiian's flights arrived on schedule. Hawaiian has led ALL U.S. carriers in that department for 26 consecutive months.

So, how many Hawaiian flights were delayed from snow and ice storms? Exactly how many bags needed to be transferred on the inter island hops? How was the Fog delay on Maui? Just curious how Hawaiian got such good numbers.

Even considering Hawaii's weather, 95.1 A+14 is really a high mark! Congratz to Hawaiian.

Plus, considering the baggage, Hawaiian takes a large amount of connecting bags from offline carriers in HNL to their interisland flights.
See, I knew American Eagle was first class all along!

So, how many Hawaiian flights were delayed from snow and ice storms?

7. Five flights were late leaving Seattle and 2 flights were late leaving Portland.

Quoting Sjcrrpax (Reply 2):
Exactly how many bags needed to be transferred on the inter island hops?

Millions! Passengers flying into HNL and transferring to other island destinations account for millions of transferred bags on our inter island hops each year.

Just curious how Hawaiian got such good numbers.

Because the employees of HA are now some of the most well compensated in the industry and are highly committed to good customer service.

Absolutely!

Like passenger satisfaction? If that were factored in, HA would still be tops. For several consecutive years, readers of both Travel and Leisure, and Conde Naste Traveler Magazines have rated Hawaiian the best airline to Hawaii, beating out UA, DL, AA, CO, NW, AQ, ATA.

Please...how many people are pissed off in Hawaii? Yeah theres a ton of bags transferred from mainland partners...but if the partners fault then they dont get charged for the bag. Most of their flights are 40 minutes or less...of course their OT:14 is gonna be great...if the plane is more than 14 minutes lats then theres definetely something wrong! Ok their OT performance is good...but hows their ORD and SFO hub doing? Exacly they dont have one! Like someone mentioned before...how many fog/snow delays did they have in Hawaii?

Please...they should not even be counted!

And the only carrier to misconnect my luggage in the last 10 years of travel?

HA! Though it did arrive on the next flight, so after I got my rental car and came back to the terminal, I was able to get it. But their tracking system left something to be desired: "Why do you have the computer printed tags if you can't track the bags?" "Well, we use the same system as American Airlines, but it doesn't track anything beyond HNL."
Of all the things to worry about... the Wookie has no pants.

Very good news for Hawaiian and its people. I've flown them on many inter-island routes but flying them recently on Honolulu-Sydney-Honolulu was a real boon to me: those were two of the best flights I've ever had. They were on-time, the planes were spotless, the service (both on the ground and in the air) warm and genuinely friendly. Can't wait to fly them again.

Congratulations to all the employees of HA. Good job. Yes, HA is my airline of choice to Hawaii. I was a loyal United customer for years but after my first flight on HA, I was sold. Plus, it's great to have 2 nonstops a day to choose from out of LAS. No connecting in LAX or SFO. A few or the airports they serve can have some weather related issues. SFO, PDX and SEA. They also fly 2-3 charters a week from HNL to ANC and back so they have a chance to get some pretty rough weather in Alaska. Aloha.

I am sorry, this was December 2005, Independence operated all that month so HP would never be #2 and HP might not be #2 next time since DH is gone.

When baggage is mishandled between another carrier and HA going to an outer island, who gets blamed?

Sorry to pick on OOer here, but his responses summarize a lot of sour grapes in this thread. Not just him.

Quoting OOer (Reply 8):

Anyone who has a honeymoon, conference, or business travel screwed up by an airline. That's happened to me on each account, and it wasn't Hawaiian (or Aloha) at fault.

Quoting OOer (Reply 8):

So by the same token, we should exclude all the commuter flights in California, Florida, Texas, and the Northeast flown by WN, HP, US, DL, etc.?

Quoting OOer (Reply 8):

Hopefully none! But it does rain daily. I've been delayed in Hilo a couple times with a very heavy shower. And sometimes there are tropical storms. But that's geography for you. How about we factor in a weather denominator to make things fair for UA, US and NW? Or how about we live with the fact that weather is a given, and how an airline adjusts to that adversity reveals a lot about how the airline is run?

What percentage or flights are nuder 40 minutes for the airlines mentioned above? What pecentage of lifghts are under 40 minutes that are operated by HA? The commuter flights operated by the express carriers for those airlines dont count for those airlines but for each individuals on time performance!

WN doesn't have express carriers. HP, DL, and US do run main line shuttle operations in CA/AZ/NV and in the Northeast. On the flip side, HA does long distance flights to the mainland and Pacific.

I would also think that a heavy schedule of shorter hops can amount to larger delays -- more chance for problems at more airports. (I have seen that on Hawaiian.)

I don't think the transportation ratings are in a position to select the route systems that favor one airline or another. I don't think your arguments hold as much water as you think they do.

Geez! All this drama. Look, the FAA has criteria and a certain airline beat the pack. So what about weather advantages. Come up with a new ranking sytem and judge airlines your way. Or write your congressman a letter to get the FAA criteria changed. This is much about nothing.

Or better yet, write your Congressman about OO/EV They are the Queen no holes barrred on bumping luggage cause their barbie jets can't handle what they've booked. WE HEAR IT ALL THE TIME. Then they rely on other carriers to EXPEDITE bumped bags. If it wasn't for Horizon in the Northwest about 70% of OO bags would still be flaoting aroudn those carousel rings on Saturn.

Congrats to HA - I have seen vast improvement especially on their inter-island service which, quite frankly, used to be a nightmare. I switched from NW to HA for all my Hawaii trips from SEA several years ago, and I don't think NW could win me back at this point.

Last carrier handles the case, so they get the blame.

Exactly! Interisland on-time performance used to be horrible. Why do all of you think that HAL used to mean "Hawaiian Always Late." It used to be so bad that the on-time performace on a good day was in the low 70s. Even when the 717s first came on, the on-time performance didn't improve much. I can also tell you that most of the delays were due to customer service or loading delays, not mechanical.

BTW, it doesn't matter that the weather is mostly fair in Hawaii. The fact that they can fly each aircraft on 10-12 cycles everyday, with 30 min or less turn arounds, and be on-time more than 95% of the time is a great feat for any airline.

Well prof's to Hawaiian. Great job, and the employees should be proud. Next time I go to Hawaii it will be on Hawaiian, since I think they are now the only one serving SJC.

But on the other hand Hawaiian bragging about being the #1 airline is a little like a 1-AA football team bragging about being the #1 Football team in the nation. Making 168 flights a day, most of them from Paradise to Paradise, is not really in the same league as AA.
