Family Airlines: Did They Fly?

Thu Jun 01, 2000 3:26 am

I remember that in the early 90s I saw a picture of an ex TWA Boeing 747-131 in the unusual bold livery of "Family Airlines", with a Stars and Stripes tail, red stripes along the fuselage and a stylised boy with baseball-cap at the front.
Did this airline ever operate any flights and where did they go? I do know that this particular aircraft was scrapped some years ago still wearing these colours.

I don't think they ever flew although they were going to be based out of Las Vegas. Something about they were going to cater to people with children. The idea didn't seem to make sense and I guess it didn't since the only aircraft that wore their colors is history.

I saw the picture but don't remember who was from. I saw the 747 parked at SANTA BARBARA. Can you image that SBA has RWY 7/25 is 6,056 ft? 747 can handle landing and take off!! I'm sure they don't service out of SBA. Maybe cheaper fee for parking for a while. I think they never start service.

They never got their AOC cos apparently the main guys who were going to run it were Family in a completely different meaning of the word (cue: music from The Godfather).

The colorful (read: tacky) Boeing 747 never flew in revenue service and was subsequently scrapped. I believe the ex-TWA 747 was originally a -136 delivered to BOAC (G-AWNI?) - correct me if I'm wrong. At any rate, it was a sad ending for a once proud airliner.
