What's Going To Happen To The US/HP 737s?

Sun Feb 05, 2006 3:12 pm

Does anyone know what the plan is for all the 737s in US and HP service? I've noticed that most of the US 737s are in desperate need of a paint job, yet none of them (at least none that I know of) have received the new colors, even those that have gone in for maintenance. Are these models scheduled for retirement in the near future?

Some are going back, but the last US jets going back are just about gone with a couple more HP birds out the door as well. The combined fleet will stabilize for the near term at around 125 733s and 734s. Any retirement beyond that will require more mainline jets coming on board, either Airbuses or the hotly-rumored Embraer 190s. I wouldn't expect to see those for at least another four or five years.

Bottom line? Expect US 737 Classics to hang around well into the next decade.

The US birds are not getting the new paint, because the goal of the paint program is to get the corporate image unified. So, the America West aircraft are getting the bulk of the paint. There's close to a dozen HP birds either painted or in the paint shop now - all Airbuses.

If I remember correctly a few of the US 737's will get the new paint by the end of 2006.

Which is why it would be a good idea to get them in the new colors

True, but it is even more crucial that the HP birds get the new US scheme, as they have nothing linking them to US whatsoever. The US 737, though an old scheme are still for the least in a US scheme.

I guess I can understand the need for a unified corporate image, but man, some of those US 737s look horrid. Some of the ones I've seen going in and out of DCA look like they've flown through a big tub of paint thinner; there are huge chunks of paint missing from bodies. Yet, at roughly $50K a pop for a new paint job, I can also understand why a cash strapped company like US is a little slow to get them all repainted.

Well they aren't cash strapped anymore, but yes it is very expensive to paint an aircraft. It will be done, but the HP planes will be done first for obvious reasons.

I thought HP was all Airbus except for the 75s....where do their 733s come from??? I mean I know they had them, but I thought they went all Airbus last year, or was that F9 that finally simplified, unfortunately to the a32x? I agree, they might need paint, but if its in a US scheme, leave it, get the HP birds done, and then come back and get the paint and interior on the original US aircraft.

F9 went all Airbus last year, HP still have a lot of B733s, as another poster mentioned.  Smile

I like the US 737's in their old colours....I guess it would take a while to adjust to their new colours....but I'm glad they will be in the fleet for many years as I prefer US's 737's over HP's A319/A320.......

Boeing was stupid to not take F9 seriously when they needed new planes....doubt we'll be seeing F9 flying Boeing planes anytime soon, if ever..

Will the HP planes get the US airways interiors/seats or visa-versa? Also, are the US F/C seats the same as the HP airbus ones?

The word was that ALL aircraft would be repainted by the end of 2006. But maybe that was just all the HP planes. But the term "all" was definitely there  Smile

I think from now on they are only taking delivery of Airbus. They still have MANY 733s though, they have been a 737 based fleet from the beginning and only finally retired the last 732 last year.

The last Boeing aircraft delivered to America West came in 1999 - used 733s. Everything since then has been Airbus.

Not that it's a big issue, the AWA 733s are glass cockpit, USA 733 and 734s are not. AWA used to fly a mixed fleet of 732, 733 non-glass, and 733 glass.
I don't understand everything I don't know about this.

The latest rumor I've heard is that the state flags will stay, perhaps even a Pennsylvania and North Carolina paint scheme added, but the teamwork plane, AZ Cardinals, probably the Ohio (since CMH is no longer a hub) and the AZ Diamondback schemes are going away. But no firm decision as to what will happen with the HP 757s has been made yet.

Adding to COERJ145's reply (#11), does anyone know of the final seat
configuration of HPs and USs common aircraft? Has anyone in Phoenix made
a decision on this? I'm hoping for the US standard because they appear to
have more F seats as well as more seat pitch in Y (although very minor) to
HPs. For example USs A320 is 16F/126Y and HPs A320 is 12F/138Y; and
USs A319 is 12F/108Y and HPs A319 is 12F/112Y. So it appears that US
replaces the 2 rows of Y seats that HP has in the A320s with 1 row of F seats.
And the seat pitch of 1 row of F seats does not equal the seat pitch of 2 rows
of Y seats. With that in mind, it would appear that the rows of Y seats in
USs A320s have about 1 inch more of pitch than HPs A320s. I know it sounds
a bit trivial, but every inch of seat pitch in Y class counts. Plus, it is always
nicer to have more F class seats to upgrade to when available.

I would not expect more F seats in any aircraft except for the US Airways 757s. They'll probably be brought back up to 14 to match the HP birds.
