737 Overruns Runway In BKK

Mon Feb 06, 2006 4:58 am

Apprently a Nok Air 737-400 overran runway at Bangkok International. The plane was headed to Phuket when pilots reported a trouble with the engine. They decided to come back to BKK and that is when the incident happened.

I wonder if they landed on the golf course?

One night in Bangkok and the world's your oyster...

Hmm...where were the news helicopters? Where were the pessimistic CNN reporters? Where were the 'analysts' trying to link the event to the Greek aircraft crash a few months ago?

I don't know what happened exactly, but the information given is contradictory. First it says that the plane made an emergency landing, and then it says that it failed to lift off the runway. You can't have both, can you?

One version says that they lost an engine during the take-off roll and skidded off the runway, and the other that they did lift off at 1.48pm and executed the emergency landing at 2.00pm.

The plane was HS-TDD, still in Thai Airways colours but without THAI titles and with a sticker "Operated by Nok Air"

This is Nok Air's press release, confirming that the plane did take off and return to the airport:

Press Release: Nok Air Flight in Emergency Landing

Bangkok, 5 February 2006 – Nok Air Flight DD7506 was forced to make an emergency landing this afternoon at Bangkok ’s Don Muang Airport. All 110 passengers and 5 crewmembers are safe, with only two minor injuries incurred during the emergency disembarking procedures.

The Nok Air flight left Bangkok at 13:48 for Phuket. All take off procedures were normal and without incident. Upon reaching an altitude of 1500 feet a noise was heard from the right wing, which required investigation. The right wing engine then lost power and the Captain made the decision to return to Bangkok.

Following set guidelines and procedures the Captain climbed to 3000 feet and then brought the plane down for a smooth landing. Upon touch down there were apparent issues with the brake system and the plane went off the end of the runway as it came to a stop. At this point the Captain turned the plane to the left so that it would come to rest on a grassy area, thus insuring the safety of the passengers. Following safety procedures the plane was evacuated via the door slide. The plane was undamaged and the causes of these technical issues are under investigation.

Never heard of that one before. Any truth to this?

The plane landed on 21R. BKK has a strip of grass between 21L and 21R (with the famous golf course) so by turning left it ended up in the grass. The other side has all kinds of buildings. Whether the pilots intended to turn the plane onto the grass I don't know.

Two almost identical incidents in one day. Was the runway also slippery because of snow like at AAR?  silly

Guess not, eh  no
