JL Suspends LAS, KIX-LAX; KIX-BNE-SYD Stays

Tue Feb 07, 2006 3:09 am

This was talked about about two weeks ago here when it was first speculated, and now it is official: JAL will suspend all service to Las Vegas (NRT-LAS-LAX-NRT) and thier daily Los Angeles-Osaka service this fall. They have decided against, however, plans to cut their Osaka-Brisbane-Sydney-Osaka service.

No dates were mentioned in the press release, which also mentions increased service from Tokyo to Vancouver, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Taipei.

I think AA could do well on a daily LAX-KIX flight with one of their 777s, but alas, I don't think they can spare the aircraft right now.

Considering United, NWA and now JAL have all dropped LAX-KIX at some point, I would say AA would not stand much of a chance in the market considering its weak presence in Asia.

Also dont forget AA has flown to KIX in the past and along with NGO dropped both.

NGO was dropped because AA lost a big Toyata contract to UA which basically guaranteed them a profit, as the Toyata exec. were flying business class...

because of new routes and 777's needed (not to mention the price of fuel), margins go too slim to take a chance on that route..hence they dropped it

this route would be a perfect 787 route..!

Everyone said the same thing about AA on JFK-NRT, and they now are arguably one of the strongest competitors on the route, having outlast NW, which was serving the market for fifty years. Everyone also said the same thing about AA on LAX-NRT, that the market was too full with JAL, ANA, UA, KE, TG, RG, etc., and there was no room for weak AA's single daily 777. AA is now doing just fine on the route.

I think the mix of AA's huge LAX feed, coupled with codeshare feed from JAL on the other end of the route and JAL's FF base at both ends would make it work. But, alas, I could be wrong!

I would have thought JL would do extremely well to LAS. I guess not. How poorly were their yield/load factors?

Were the yield/load factors on KIX-LAX-KIX performing that poorly? Thought they might just down grade the ac to a 772?

How many more additional flights will LAX get along with YVR, SFO etc., since the article mentioned they will increase flights?

There's long been a rumor- and strongly denied- the LVCVA (Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority) had "subsidized" JAL's Las Vegas service. Service started in 2002, so perhaps the subsidies were due to come to an end.

Just flew DFW-KIX-DFW this past month, F was full on KIX-DFW, and J was overbooked too.... DFW-KIX on a weekday -- F was half full, and J was almost all full. So I guess if KIX-DFW can somewhat survive, KIX-LAX can work... but I guess the main problem now is the availability of Boeing 777s. The next new 777 will go to SHA... so it won't happen.

JAL has only stated that it would not drop BNE/SYD in 2006!

This to me indicates that jetstar International will start operating the sector in 2007, with a JL and QF codeshare.

product will be economy and premium Y.

The Dallas-Osaka route has very lucrative cargo contracts that keep the route profitable.

Service started in October 1998. It was suspended for a few months following 9/11, however.

Fantastic! Increased flights to YVR. I was under the impression Vancouver was going the way LAS? Flights are full to Vancouver but understood like everything else to this city it was low yield traffic. They are obviously making money on the route to consider an increase in service?

I am glad MEX was not cut!

No, not nessecarily. Sometimes a way to improve underperforming routes is by increasing frequency to make it more attractive to business travelers and offering customers in general better options. I'm not saying YVR is losing money for JAL - I have no idea - but just because an airline increases service does not mean they are making money on it, but it usually does mean the route is not bleeding heavily.

Will ANA or perhaps AA, UAL carry on this route(LAS)? Hate to see it dumped as LAS needs all the "heavies" it can get.

Agree with you! It remains to be seen, however, if the entrance of JL into oneworld and the launch of AM's supposed MEX-TIJ-NGO do not make JL pull off from MEX.
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

The Vancouver service that they are considering makes me wonder.

Because they do JL15/16 over the summer months on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays in order to make Saturday double daily to NRT and Mon and Thur have service to Tokyo since the flight goes to MEX.

I guess this will just be service from Tokyo? I always thought KIX could be a possibility because AC does so well on the route that they fly double daily in the high season and an A343 sometimes.
