SAA Has New Logo And Hands Out Star Alliance Book

Tue Feb 07, 2006 5:29 am

South African Airways has recently handed out a booklet pertaining information about their pending application to join the Star Alliance, with in the booklet includes details of what still needs to be completed and what has already been completed in order for them to join Star Alliance.

They said they had to complete 65 major changes, in order to meet the requirements of the alliance.

Also their is a new logo on it's way. Very similiar to the current one but slightly altered.

I will scan a copy of it tomorrow and post it on here. They also show a few of the other logos they thought about.

P.S. More info to come tomorrow.

But their current livery (=logo?) is pretty recent and, I believe, is widely liked. It's colourful and distinctive. Why change?

The current livery on the A346's that pass through here (ATL) are beautiful!

Did they mention, when they will become a full member of the alliance?

I will be travelling to South Africa for work in March and would like to fly on SAA, but if they haven't joined by then, I'll have to take Lufthansa.

You still will be able to do so as SA and LH code-share on all South Africa to Germany flights. No need to wait for Star Alliance.

Plus, SA is better than LH in my opinion Big grin

SAA changed their logo a few months after the present scheme was adopted and not many people noticed, originally the logo was rectangular, now it is in the shape of an aircraft tail. I'm flying SAA on Thursday, hopefully I will also get this information booklet.

Okay, quicker than I thought I have the booklet in my hands (it helps having a staff member in the house) and my first look was at the new logo. I like it. Those familiar with the current SAA logo (see here) http://ww4.flysaa.com/saa_home.html will be happy to know that the change is pretty subtle. The line extending from the base of the tail is gone, now below the tail is the text "South African Airways" in the same font as before, underlined. Below the line" "A Star Alliance Member" with the Star logo. The tail is also shaded to give a 3D illusion.

Quoting Ibhayi (Thread starter):
They also show a few of the other logos they thought about

I think those other 6 in the booklet are actually alternate versions of the new logo that will be used where appropriate and where background colour or size constraints exist.

According to the booklet the current SAA logo didn't lend itself to incorporation with the Star Alliance logo and having seen the new one I tend to agree. It's really not that much different.

Before I saw SAA's website I always thought SAA flies to more destinations then the ones they have on their website. I thought SAA flies to India, Japan, Korea and mainland China especially to the north also I thought they fly to AKL. They don't really fly alot to these places except the ones they do fly to.

I wish that I could, but it seems that Air Canada isn't up to speed with the rest of the alliance. When I checked SAA's website, it showed that most of the *A carriers have mileage accrual agreements with SAA, but AC wasn't listed anywhere.  Sad

SA service BOM on a daily basis. They used to fly to KIX years ago, but the service was terminated - IIRC it was an extension of the SA HKG flight. With regards to ICN, SA will codeshare with OZ on the HKG-ICN-HKG sectors.

I asked my wife and her boss confirmed that SAA will move to the UA terminal at JFK when they join Star. There is also a very good chance that the switch from ATL to ORD will take place.

SAA officially join Star on April 1 (not an omen I hope, being April Fool's day and all...)

I think they have to, they have to publicise it locally and a 346 and 744 can't do that effectively. I flew 738 today and the in-flight safety video already has the new logo at the end.

Do you think that IAD will remain a USA destination for SA, should SA move from ATL to ORD? With the poor loads between ACC-IAD-ACC it would not surprise me at all.
BTW, anything in the Star Alliance booklet about the current codeshare agreement between SA and QF?

SA needs IAD. They need feed traffic from the most dense population area in the US.

ORD will be a welcome supplement, but just that.

I think that SAA are holding on to that route in hopes that they will eventually receive rights to carry passengers between ACC - IAD. That would make the route quite profitable as the demand is there for direct links between West Africa and the US.

Raided some old boxes today and lots of dust and sweat later emerged with some timetables between Mar 1997 and Mar 1999 with the KIX flights schedules printed in them.

The flight was via BKK (SAA had stopped serving SIN by then) operated by B742's outbound on Thurs and Sat, return Fri and Sun.

Please forgive me if this is a stupid question, but does this mean that SAA's agreement with DL will be terminated? It must, no? But I just checked delta.com and even past April, they are showing SAA flights with DL flight numbers.

Can anyone explain what will happen? Thanks!

It will supplement. They are also wanting to add a 3x weekly service to on JNB-CPT-MIA. This has less to do with Star and more to do with satisfying strong local demand in the market.

IMHO SA don't have the fleet requirements to do so. They are in desperate need of longhaul planes, yet they shed B744's. I don't see this route happening before they get additional longhaul planes.

I think we all, South Africans anyway, know what "shortly" means in terms of African timing. The timespan from 17-18 March 2006 to 1 April 2006 may be SA's definition of "shortly". We have seen it in the past.  Smile
