PAX Plane With No Windows

Tue Feb 07, 2006 10:51 am

Hello
Flew on an internal flight today with aerogaviota in cuba on an AN26 and the whole cabin just had 6 windows!!!(Trip report coming soon). Noticed on a.net database all similar planes have the same configurations. Any other PAX have a small amount of windows¿

Under the title "capacity" in the link, it says that the AN 72/74 was primarily designed as a freighter. So I'm assuming that's the main reason it does not have more windows.
Anyway, I think it's a terrible looking aircraft,(I don't really like the location of the engines) and that's my opinion. I know some of your are going to flip out on me for saying that, but look at it!

Why are the engines located on top of the wings and so close to the aircraft??
Compare it to the BAe 146-100

I could never fly on a plane like that. Seriously.

I need to have windows so I can see where I am going. If not, I definitely will get air sick.

Most military transports have few or no passenger windows.

I would think the same thing, but imagine flying in the middle of a widebody at night. Pretty much the same experience.

Quote from the airliners data section of this site:
"The most significant design feature of the An-72 and An-74 is the use of the Coanda effect to improve STOL performance, which utilises engine exhaust gases blown over the wing's upper surface to boost lift."

Also to reduce engine ingestion of debris on less developed runways...

Huh? You can see what you're near... but certainly cannot see where you're going. Unless, of course, you're one of the pilots... but then, it's already established that the aircraft has cockpit windows.

Because when the KGB agents of old stole the blueprint plans from BAe for the USSR, they took the decoy set that had the wing installed upside down. What did they know? However their cover was now exposed.....

Boeing's YC-14A, the competitor to the C-17, had a similar layout. The one and only example is at the Pima museum in Tucson.

The strong lift and high engines had advantages on gravel runways, but it lost out to the C-17.

Looks like it would be miserable. I would think it would feel something akin to a carnival ride or something.

That's the great part of the RAF. They do have windows on their military transports, on their VC-10s and TriStars, even on the KC-1.  Wink

I'm with you man. Besides, I love looking out when flying and have a spectacular view out. If I get no windows, get me a parachute, then open me the L4 door and I'll deep six myself back to the ground.
