AA In Talks To Start Service To Fortaleza

Wed Feb 08, 2006 7:16 am

While the current US-Brazil bilatteral won't allow it, AA and government officials are interested in expanding air service between the US and secondary Brazilian cities, and, according to this article, AA is in talks with the local government in the Fortaleza region to begin non-stop MIA-FOR service.

Article (Portuguese):

It is a question of if - not when - the US/Brazil air treaty will become less restrictive, and a likely outcome is, like with the Portugal/Brazil treaty, that we will have Open Skies except for GIG/GRU.

The only service between the US and NE Brazil right now is TAM's Miami-Salvador flights. However, this summer during July, TAM will offer special scheduled flights between Miami and Fortaleza, Natal, and Recife.

Also, even though the article mentions it, I wouldn't pin my hopes on JFK-FOR anytime soon. That is likely something that the local officials are trying to push, but AA won't settle for it.

Quoting MAH4546 (Thread starter):

May be AA include a weekly stop at FOR on a daily light flight (AA929/930) from MIA. FOR is a good destination in northeast, but not so famous as SSA.
All depends also on visa policy, nowadays is not so easy for americans to obtain visas to Brazil.

New York + Rio de Janeiro = One of the best combinations !
