When Will AC Return Service To MSY?

Wed Feb 08, 2006 11:46 am

I was wondering when Air Canada will return service to New Orleans. The Star Alliance Timetable has no update for flights yet, and the AC site has no news regarding the service.

Any information would be appreciated.

In my humble opinion, I don't think Canadians are in any particular rush to go to New Orleans. For us, there are a wealth of travel options in the lower U.S. States. Unless a person is on some crusade, and Air Canada will needs lots of crusaders to pay for a frequency, don't expect it anytime soon.

No offence to New Orleans, but reality rules! Why go there in the near future? Air Canada can deploy assets better from a business perspective and not have that "obligation" hanging over them as U.S. flag carriers would have.

The first YYZ service is supposed to be on a CR705, with a second on either a CR705 or an E-175. Additionally, there is a rumored YUL service.

Actually, with the combination of Mardi Gras, Jazzfest, Cruise Traffic and the significant jump in business traffic, AC has been chomping at the bit to get down here, but has not been able to because MSY hasn't officially reopened its customs yet. That may all change when the UK charters come in this weekend, as they will have to have customs

I thought all AC -> U.S flights were pre-cleared, so customs would not be an issue!

Thanks Tribird1011, you beat me to the punchline. So ACTUALLY N1120, you are wrong. We have U.S. pre-clearance in Canada at all major airports on flights bound for the U.S. (I believe there are exceptions such as Regina & Saskatoon which simply do not have the capacity to warrant?)

I still don't, in my hunble opinion, see the point for AC to fly to New Orleans in the near future.

First off, not all transborder flights are pre-cleared. Halifax, Fredericton, Kitchener, Regina, Saskatoon, and London among others don't have pre-clearence

Read above and I will add that it doesn't matter if there is pre-clearance at the Canadian airport. The DOT still requires the airport to be customs ready, even if the flight is precleared. That is why a PRE-CLEARED flight from YVR to SNA on AS actually took off and had to divert to Ontario. SNA doesn't have customs. Anyway, MSY customs is open again, so it doesn't matter.

Except of course all the business traffic, the beginning of the tourist season and the historical demand in the market.

Try eight airports - Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa, Winnipeg, and, most recently, Halifax.

And your point is? Did I not say that, having not actually stated the cities that provide U.S. pre-clearance?

We will have to wait & see. New Orleans (Katrina) was one of the worst natural disasters the United Staes has ever encountered. Tourism = rubber neckers! Business = profit from disaster! Historical demand = We have never experienced this ever before and we are crossing our fingers they will come back.

Um, what are you talking about? Mardi Gras is going on now and Jazzfest is in 2 months. Not to mention all the cruise traffic. In fact, Britannia/ThomsonFly is sending in an extra 767 next week to handle the loads

Not to mention the return of oil and gas.

Again, what are you talking about? There are strong business ties along with a lot of Canadian cruise traffic.

Ok, so when is Air Canada coming back to New Orleans? You seem to know, let us know...

Submitted in my most humble opinion.

The answer is in my opinion: When AC feels it has enough demand to operate the flights with suitable loads to make it profitable. AC has indicated it will return to MSY, but will not do it until it can generate good revenue. I'm sure it is watching the market closely.

There is little news in Canada about the condition of MSY post-Katrina and the public has vivid memories of the destruction that was wrecked upon New Orleans. While Mardi Gras may be ongoing and the Jazzfest is in 2 months there has been little or no advertising to make Canadian tourists aware that things are slowly returning to normal, or as near normal as they can be.

I could be wrong , but I think MAH4546 was actually meaning to reply to N1120A - see below where he stated that YHZ does not have pre-clearance

Anticipated return was April sked change, however, this still has not been finalized and may default to fall schedule, depending on availability of aircraft, as they are still waiting for new aircraft that wud be used to free different acft type (CRJ705 I wud assume). The likely acft type will be a mix of E190/CRJ705 aircraft operating ex YYZ/YUL with a possibility of a new service ex YYC with 1 x daily with E190.....BUT AGAIN I STRESS...NOTHING HAS BE FINALIZED!!!
You can't get there from here.

Actually, I forgot that YHZ had JUST opened its pre-clearence as it was still not opened when I moved back to New Orleans from Boston. Mark was responding to the assumption that all Transborder flights were pre-cleared

So now we have a chance at 3 destinations? This is getting cooler and cooler by the moment. YYC makes a lot of sense given the amount of oil and gas traffic.

YYC has become a "possibility" simply as you state because of all the gas and oil on the Gulf Coast, however it is yet to be seen whether this proposed schedule will takeoff.
