Why Do European Airlines...

Thu Jun 01, 2000 8:04 am

Why do so many European Airlines have 3x3 seating for both business and coach, and the same pitches in both classes? If the seating is not 3x3 it 3x2, still not as sapcious as the normal 2x2 you find on all US airlines. i dont get why they do that. And so many people say Euro airlines are better than US airlines...

You are not only paying for the seats up front you are paying for the service, something which US airlines have a lot to learn about.....If you can get Super Executive service on a one or two hour flight and sit in a simmilar seat as the ones in economy, then I don;t see the problem....Also in europe you would not have any red-eye flights or anything over 2.5 to 3 hours unless you were flying from one end to the other like a London - Kyiv flight.....where as in the US you can expect something like a 737 or and A320 from New york to LA or Toronto to on the smaller planes so long as the service is superior you get basically the same bang for your buck.....

On my frequent trips on BA, I noticed this alot, and it seemed that they did it so they could reconfigure the airplane at turnaround (i.e. have 10 biz class seats one leg and 20 the next leg) just move the curtain and sit someone in the middle seat.

Service in European business was not IMHO any better than US business class.

On my trips on AF L'espace has only two seats. they block the middle seat with a large armrest. The seats are wider.

British Airways, swissair, Lufthansa and most other European airlines use convertible seats, which can be adjusted to either 5 abreast Business class or 6 abreast economy to meet the loads on each flight. So, most European airlines have 5 abreast Business Class, but show the whole plane as 6 abreast seating because you never know where the 5/6 abreast seating divide will be and on some flights, such as domestic routes all seats will be 6 abreast

I have been on a Lufthansa flight where I sat in business class and the service was below average; very rude flight attendants!!!

Convertible 5/6 Abreast...

Tue Jun 06, 2000 1:53 pm

...I think I flew a plane with this sort of config on Ansett earlier this year... the seats toward the fron t of the 737 were "nicer" looking, but same pitch , 3-3, but had split in center seat. Were these convertible? Sorry I didn't get the reggo, couldn't get a clean angle for the picture.

European Airlines operate business class on EU flights while US airlines operate first class on domestic flights. Its 2-2 for first, 2-3 for biz and 3-3 for coach. There is some logic behind it.
