UA 777 To Honolulu

Thu Feb 09, 2006 1:45 pm

On the 21st I have a flight from San Francisco to HNL. I'm in first class, but I'm not sure if it is a three-class 777 or the domestic two-class 777. Obviously I'm hoping for the three-class 777 since I'd get a sleeper seat.
Are the three-class 772's used to HNL often?

Not anymore...in fact, they are barely used on any domestic-HNL route. The only three-class 777's would be to KIX and NRT. However, the best thing to do is call them, and ask them about the seat arrangement being 2-2-2 or 1-2-1.

All mainland to Hawaii are domestic 2 class 777's

three class aircraft are used for long haul 98% of the time. domestically you'll see them hub to hub maybe once a day- but nothing like it was just a couple years ago!

I took UA from LAX to HNL in the summer of 2002. I, as a student, was unfortunately in Coach, and was very disappointed because I had flown in other three class 777's before and this one was two class and no PTV's, argh!!! In addition, because it was a flight to HNL (I'm guessing), there were tons of families with little kids, the interior was decorated in this tacky tropical design and the majority seemed to be inexperienced flyers. Basically, it will be a completely different flight when compared to a flight to the East Coast (for example). But hey, maybe because its January, there won't be as many families, but you are also in First, so probably won't make a difference...except for that inevitable crying baby in the back  Smile However, I must say that the FA's were very nice and professional and it was one of the very few disappointments I've had with United.

Do they still play that "half way point" (or whatever it was called) game on the HNL flights?

If you are going on DL, I assume you're on a 764 or 763. I'm surprised you are not flying NW if you are starting in DTW. I flew from DTW to HNL (and on to Lihue) back in '98 on NW. It was DC10 via San Francisco. Not sure if they still are doing DC10's or A330's.

Wow. All 777's I've flown had PTV, including UA's. I had no idea that some didn't. Weird.

Yes, they do - the prize is gift certificates to Hilo Hattie.

I have played the two times I have gone. I missed the first time by one minute and one second, and the second time I missed by three and a half minutes. Very proud of myself for that one.

Yeah it is a B764 and I bought it on NW's website. The only do the D10s to HNL from MSP and KIX and NRT I think.

Ok, strategy time...what works best for you? Using wheels up time as an indicator, or do you actually sit there and attempt the math. Or, do you simply half the flight time...it would be oh, so much easier on 3-class 777's or 767's with the Airmap!

I've never seen a three class 777 from the mainland to HNL or OGG. UA has, on occasion, slipped a PTV-equipped two class 777 over here but I wouldn't count on it. Either way, happy travels en route to our aina!

Sometimes a 744 goes to HNL. Yes, in the 70's and 80's there were a lot of 747's going to Hawaii from the US. CO, UA and NW come to mind. Even AA I believe for the short period they had 747's.

You will find that you won't miss the PTV's on the HNL runs. It reall is a short flight from SFO and UA typically has good choices for the movies on the big screen.

NW flys 744's to HNL from NRT, we still see an occasional 742 (positioning probably) and DC-10's from MSP, DTW and KIX. SEA, PDX, and SFO (back on line after a couple years hiatus) are 753's.

I can't wait until you too have a young child and have to travel somewhere! Believe me the parents wouldn't be taking their children by air if ther was a viable option. Sorry, you just can't drive to Hawaii! I am traveling HNL-LAX-DEN-HNL soon with my 9 month old to visit grandma while my wife is away. My unsuspecting neighbors on board the planes might not be thrilled about sitting near a baby, but I am not looking forward to having to keep him "quietly" entertained and "neatly" fed while holding him, or leaving him in my lap while I eat or whild he sleeps! Give the 'rents some sympathy rather than a sneer!

Don't forget LAX and the seasonal ANC flights, both on 753s as well.

I agree. My daugther is now 5, but it is tough on long flights. CPH - SEA is a long flight for a little girl. Long for the parents too.

I haven't flown 1st on a domestic UA 777. Doesn't 1st have PTV's on these domestic birds?

Interiors are completely customer-specified. If the customer doesn't have them installed, they're not there.

Its just UA's domestic trips that don't have them.
