Another Useless New Runway In France-Beziers!

Thu Feb 09, 2006 7:05 pm

There is an article in todays' "Midi Libre" newspaper (Montpellier ) about the intention of the city of Beziers to renovate the 1800x30 meter runway into 2000x45 meters, allowing services of 180 seat aircraft( Boeing 737 and A 320 ). This in an apparent move to boost the local tourism economy.Cost of the works are estimated roughly 6 M €-to be paid by the taxpayer.
We have enough airports in Languedoc Roussillon without traffic and don't need more runways but more flight into existing airports like Montpellier ( only 45 Km from Beziers ),Nîmes,Carcassonne (50 Km from Beziers ) or Perpignan ( 70 Km from Beziers )
Problem -as usual- are the politicians, that pushe regions to become operators of airports without enough skills to develop them efficiently.
For those who read french..

You know they are doing this because they want Ryanair service, right? The thing I don't get is that at 1738m/5701" SNA can launch a 738 and easily make it any distance that a European LCC would want to fly. Why would Beziers need to extend their runway?

Is a 30 meter runway width wide enough to accommodate 737/A320 service? IIRC, SNA's 19R/1L is 150ft wide (150 X 5700). If they're going to the expense of widening this runway by 15 meters, it probably makes sense to lengthen the runway by 200 meters as well.

I think FR are going to pick NMI as a base anyway. BZR should be attracting Flybe and others with smaller aircraft.

I agree that it makes sense to add length if they are doing a reconstruction anyway. 30m is just over 98", which means that the 738 with winglets would overhang by almost 10 feet on each side, so it would be dicey but given that the 744 regularly operates from 150" runways with a wingspan over 200", I don't see a huge problem unless the taxiways are too close

I would love to see more flights into Nîmes, conveniently located between Marseille and Montpellier -close to Arles,Avignon and the Luberon area with many foreigners having properties there. But the new lowcost terminal in MRS might be a handicap for the developpement of Nîmes...(only 60 minutes drive from Nimes to Marseille...)

Although you are a bit biased as more interested in the development of your local airport than in the development of somebody else's airport, I agree with you about too many airports without traffic.
I have family in Beziers and I live in Stavanger, Norway. I have no other choice than to fly to MRS or TLS from AMS, CPH or FRA, and drive.
I would love a milkman line MRS-NMI-MPL-BZR, but my support only would not be enough  Smile. Air Littoral tried some of it, with little success.
Good motorways kill regional air traffic.

If you wanted to visit France as a tourist and could go to Montpellier, Nimes or Beziers. Then there would be a number of factors involved.

However, if there were airports at Montpeller and Nimes, but to go to Beziers meant an additional drive of about an hour, what would you do. Are there features at Beziers that are sufficiently unique to compensate.
