US Airways To Recall 55 Pilots

Sat Feb 11, 2006 11:35 am

Well, like the title says, US is set to recall 55 pilots. This is not because of the 190 order, but because of the three ATA 757's and due to pilot retirements. Expect more to be recalled around September for the 190. This is a good start.

I know somebody mentioned this on another thread, but I thought everybody should see this.

On a side note, this goes along with four classes for furloughed F/As, but on the HP side. So technically they haven't been recalled yet, but they will work HP mainline flights.

Good news for them...who would have thought that they'd even be in a position to offer people their jobs back. Now if we can only see that from DL in a few years.

There are not as many on furlough who will come back as most people expect. The world is different now than 5 years ago.

There will be a pilot shortage sooner than most people think.

Sure, but they have so much pilots on furlough that it doesn't matter. It is going to take years to get through all the furloughs.

Not as long as you think. Many are at Jet Blue, AirTran and Social Security (or will be soon). The pool is not as deep as many believe. I had a US Airways jumpseater recently who said that within 5 years a HUGE percentage of US Airways pilots will be retired. This is the case at most majors. The shortage is coming.

There is no doubt about that, although I wouldn't say a huge percentage, but a huge amount. With that being said, US has over 1,000 pilots on furlough, and it is going to take a few years to get through them. The 190's will only becoming a few a month, so US is not going to go through 1,000 pilots within the year.

Quite a few pilots have found other jobs, but the majority will becoming back.

Actually the E190s will have the new Brazilian robot pilots. It should be interesting.

Don't be stupid. They would never have the robots fly the plane first. They have to test it out as F/A's first....I mean, come on.  wink

They will certainly be recalling for a couple years. I also don't know how it will work out with the integration of America West and US Airways guys. It will be interesting. Don't take my comments as negative at all. I certainly wish them all the best (honest) and a speedy trip back to the flight deck of a major airplane at a major airline.

But I still believe that the furlough pool is not as deep as many think. The pool of young pilots is not very deep either. At ZW we have hired a lot of new ones lately and the so-called "regional" airlines can no longer require hard mins of 1500 hours total time or anything like that. I digress.

The other thing I wonder about is the fight which will eventually happen with the E170 and the E190. Same airplane for all practical purposes, just different size. It would be like an airline operating the A319 in one pilot group and the A320 in another. Just an observation. I think the future will bring issues to that idea too.

Anyone know just how many pilots at US are expected to retire within the next few years. I know at ZW we had a pretty big number of 146 guys hang up their hats. Did HP have to furlough anyone? When do we think the work groups are going to be joined?

ZW is hiring like crazy right now. I know quite a few people who have gotten on with them in the past couple months. Recently, I've had friends interview and get hired with:

Horizon (for the Shorts!)
American Eagle (ERJ)
Skywest (EMB-120 and CR7)
Air Wisconsin (CRJ2)
Air Net (unknown)

the jobs are out there.

The E170 are another airlines (Mid/RP). Some guys are flying for them under Jets for jobs. E190 are going to be Us mainline and E170 express.

I don't know why they don't make it all express? UAL has it that way and use RP no less. They are doing well with a two class of service layout.

Because outsourcing a 99-seat jet is unthinkable? Because scope clauses still mean something, somewhere?

This is the million dollar question... not only for the pilots but the rest of labor groups. Anyone have any insights or rumors as to how this will work?

Easy. All the furloughed guys will be put at the bottom of the list. I mean, why change their luck right now?  frown

Quoting Planespotting (Reply 12):

Eh, I would be careful when I say that. Sure, for young guys looking for hours, the jobs are they. They always have been. But for veteran pilots who have to support a full family, they can't take these low paying jobs, thus, the jobs aren't there.

Quoting Nwab787techops (Reply 14):

Sure, since I know how you love having your job outsourced.  sarcastic
