UA P.S. Brand

Sun Feb 12, 2006 11:16 am

Is PS a separate brand (an airline within an airline) like Ted? (except, of course, PS is on the otehr end of the spectrum  Smile)

No, it's just a higher service level and is only offered on LAX-JFK and SFO-JFK.

It's a 757 service with an upgraded cabin interior such as laptop power outlets, greater seat pitch, etc.

No. It is just a product branding. The planes are painted in United colours.

Generous seat pitch, and relatively low density seating for a 757.

There are different "business oriented" announcements on P.S. flights, but thats about the only difference from a regular UA flight (other than the food/seats)

Matt

P.S.: Why do F/As nickname P.S. flights "Personal Slave", is it because of the high # of premium cabin PAX and the 1 aisle?

Have never heard that before, it makes for an awesome flight. Would rather fly P.S. Than any other trans-con.

Uh, the seats, the food, the entertainment, the scheduling, the gate assignments, the baggage handling the pax/fa ratio....it is more than just announcements and a little more food. I take it you haven't flown on a ps plane yet.

I flew UA p.s. SFO-JFK in December and was very impressed by the seats, food and service. Even as a big BA fan, I must say that the flight felt special. Big contrast with the outbound AA flight.

I think that's the point -- it's a bit of a sad indictment, but the UA FA's aren't used to a premium service that is supposed to be truly premium -- at a comparable tier to the international flag carriers (SQ, CX, etc.).

It is certainly excellent in First and Business. Flew Business once. Seat recline is the best there is for a transcon. Excellent selection of IFE. Food is decent. I have flown Economy for a number of times. Good seat pitch, IFE is still not anything premium yet. I am a PTV fan, unless UA installs those in the Economy Plus cabin, it's not premium for me yet.

I would imagine it just kind of a pain handing them out and collecting them plus handing out DVDs to go in them. I'm surprised no one has complained that p.s. doesn't have PTVs with AVOD at every seat. Where are the PTV addicts now?

I have never heard the term before, however it is well-known that the United Business cabin is difficult to work, with just two flight attendants. The two in business work their tails off. This contrasts with a staffing of three F/A's in business when the 767's were operated on the Premium Transcon routes. The JFK-based flight attendants do a stellar job, none-the-less.

The part that people forget about PS is that it is totally out the price window went compared to other domestic F offerings. You can fly in F from NYC-LAX on Continental for $500, but if you want to fly on PS it can run you up to $4000.

Well, you also have the C option, which is still better than typical Domestic F but more comparable than the F. In fact, the F seats on p.s. are better than UA's international C seats. It has also helped them recapture a lot of the contract F traffic they lost to AA in 2000/2001

All the better for UA. If they can extract that sort of revenue premium in this competitve market...they obviously made the right more with ps.

I love the service on the p.s. flights. I think it's been a big success and even more so when companies have to pay full Y they can send their employees on UA p.s. and they will have a much better service, with a newly remodeled cabin, complimentary meals and snacks, more leg room AA can't say anything like this anymore and they just raised the price on the BOB junk boxes to $4-.

AA has gotten really frugal and now WN has better in flight service than AA. That's a sad shame on the transcons. I recently read an article about AA's new upgraded F and C catering on the transcons and the way it was written and the AA rep interviewed, the impression I got from her tone in the interview was, it's like they have completely forgotten about those in the main cabin and they are not important to them. {this is just my impression}.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend.

The DVD players come in a case with the DVD's included! Movies, Sopranos, Sex in the City, etc. are all there to watch at your leisure. The F/A's just have to hand out the case and the headset. It's really very efficient. The players are great. The seats are great. The service rocks. No other domestic airline has anything like it.

This is quoted from this month's issue of United Hemispheres inflight magazine:

"P.S. offers the only U.S. domestic first-class, lie-flat seats, noise-reduction headsets, and Bellini champagne cocktails. To make room for a plane full of spacious seats, we did the unthinkable during a time when most of our peers in America were focusing only on reducing customer service. We "customer-ized" some Boeing 757s and actually took seats OFF the aircraft that we were using for our transcontinental flights...

... You told us that P.S. works for you. Seats on our P.S. aircraft are among the most sought after. We have corporate customers who prefer to book P.S. seats over seats on their corporate jets. That tells us we're doing something right..."

- From the article, Distinctly United.

Sounds good to me! Now only if they would import this onto their INTERcontinental flights, on 747s!  cloudnine

Yeah..it sounds like PS is more luxurious than most of their int'l 744 flights! Do you think any other transcon carrier might be following in UA's footsteps? Delta's new long haul service sounds something like it...but considering they don't even have 3 class seating....

As a FA who works these flights constantly ( in C most of the time) I will see iI have yet to hear one complaint from the PAX. It was one of the best ideas we had at UA. There are a couple of thngs I personally would hav done differently. I would have definitely put in PTV in all the seats. It is a nuisance to pass put those DVDs but we get through it Big grin
You will always have naysayers, but in my experience, PS has been a colossal hit.

Artsyman,
please provide a link to the ual website that shows a fare of $4000 o/w OR r/t.......using apollo as a fare guide. are you assuming a --full fare ticket--?????

fare basis cost airline
Y 1527.00 CO base cost before taxes
F 2300.00 CO
FPS 2355.00 UA
FUA/CUA 1820.00 UA
F26/C26 1820.00 AA
F236 2355.00 AA
F 2329.00 AA

The full fare walk up f class ticket on co is 2300.00...i didnt know co had a first class?????again if you can please post a link to a $4000.00 ticket on ual with the fare basis other than the above, i will believe your credibilty...other than that you can get a ua first class ticket for around 3000.00 ROUND TRIP based on a fare basis of FUA at around 2600.00 roundtrip plus taxes....

Uadc8contrail, your pricing compares normal UAL domestic F pricing, Not PS pricing as posted by N1120A.

As someone who spent over $43,000 dollars on CO in 2005, I can assure you that I have never ever seen a $2300 domestic price attached to a CO flight. You can generally walk up and get a $596 F ticket (Z class) at any time.

On PS, the prices are extremely high. Look, I am not complaining, all power to them for being able to get that revenue.

Bottom line is, when people start saying that PS is so much better than other airlines domestic F product, then they really need to attach a "but it costs up to 8 times the price of the other carriers domestic F product"

Um, I agree that p.s. is more expensive but you should probably compare apples to apples. What is the price of the highest CO fare class in F. Also, the $4500 price I got was a RT ticket, not a OW

Actually, CO Biz First is their international product and compares quite well with p.s. First, but I think you are thinking about CO Domestic First, which I agree is no match for p.s. First

This seems like a petty discussion. The point is, the PS price FAR exceeds the price of any CO domestic F product. Even with the $2300 fare that was quoted, it is still WAY less than the $4549.05 on PS.

There are no $2300 domestic one-way fares on Continental unless you are refering to Hawaii, but that should not be considered domestic. Also, most high one-way fares are the same or less when booking a roundtrip.

There is a major error in this CO v UA issue. UA doesn't offer "F" on P.S. transcons. Buy an F fare on UA from EWR-LAX and then see what happens when you exchange it for a P.S flight from JFK, you'll find UA will place you in the C, not the P cabin.

Likewise CO's F is priced like UA,AA, et al's F. AA also sells 3 cabins as P,J and Y.

Otherwise, you are comparind apples and oranges.

Seriously...I never even got the concept of Ted. It's not like song or B6. It doesn't have any of the perks such as PTVs, great snack service, etc. It's basically United w/out F and the ability to purchase the crapbox on flights of 2.5 hours as opposed to 3.5 hours.
