Which Major Airlines Dont Belong To An Alliance?

Sun Feb 12, 2006 9:38 pm

I was just fooling around with the idea that a new alliance would formed. Is that possible? what major airlines still have not joined an alliance?
VS, AI, TK, JL, Emirates, Aerolineas Argentinas, Mexicana, Asiana, Malaysian.
I am noticing the main problem would be with a major US and European airline.
Maybe CO and Alitalia should leave Skyteam and form a new alliance with VS and Emirates.

EK and VS comes to mind. Although some people don't regard VS as major.

Asiana

Asiana is a member of Star Alliance

Other airlines which are not part of an alliance (I realise some of these may not be considered major):

Ethiopian Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Air Pacific, Egypt Air, El Al, Air Malta, Cyprus Airways, EVA Air, TACA, Saudi Arabian Airlines, Indian Airlines, SriLankan Airlines, BWIA, Air Jamaica, Air Namibia, Garuda Indonesia...

Southwest Airlines comes first to mind for me. WN is most certainly a major.

And Jet Airways ... arguably a major, though it controls 50% of the domestic aviation market in the world's second most populous country.

Although maybe not a major Icelandair springs to mind. There are also some LCCs such as Virgin Blue (also is ELFAA a proper alliance?)

Qatar is concentrating on long-haul, to rival Emirates, and the alliances aren't looking for long-haul airlines in the Middle East.

Oneworld picked Royal Jordanian specifically because of RJ's high-frequency regional route plans.

Star is also looking more at localised regional operators to expand its membership, and I suspect that Gulf Air - which wants to develop as a high-frequency regional specialist in co-operation with Oman Air - is more in line with the sort of carrier Star would like to have.

Get real. No alliance would have El Al, there's no advantage if you can't interline pax going to other destinations. And El Al ain't in the business of flying people from Paris to Bangkok or Copenhagen to Cape Town. They fly people to and from Israel. Full stop. (I'm sure they have carried pax who are just transiting TLV but what I'm saying is 99% true.)

Israel has too many problems with security, who it can and can't carry, who is willing to fly it etc. I'm a gentile not a Muslim but on human rights grounds I wouldn't fly El Al. I know plenty of other people feel that way, and then there's the entire world's Muslim population who feel the same sentiment but 1000 times stronger. El Al would only be a hinderance to an airline alliance - all alliances have airlines (more than one I would think) that fly to Israel, so they don't need LY to put Tel Aviv on their combined route map, and LY don't offer any decent transit possibilities, and even if they did, you'd have problems with passengers of Arab or Muslim descent / anyone who doesn't like 3 hour check-in times / any member of Amnesty International / me.

Next.

You know, I've tried redeeming and earning miles on Singapore Air a few times, and they're really stingy. If it's a certain fare that was paid, they won't honor it, and if it's not their own frequent flyer program, they won't honor it, but that was my individual experience. So, I no longer even try to redeem miles on them. Not that I have to these days...

I'm hopeful that Jet Airways (9W) will end up in an alliance sooner or later. I guess Jet needs to resolve their issues with the USA first.

Aerolineas argentinas should join SkyTeam.
But since AR is temporarily out of IATA, we have to wait.

Alaska Airlines

While it is not directly a member of any alliance, it has strong ties with several of Skyteam's carriers (most notably DL & NW)

But OA is far from being a "Major" (just like many other airlines mentionned in posts above : Air Jamaica, Air Namibia, Air Malta etc...).

Moreover, Olympic Airlines should join another list very soon : the list of defunct airlines ....

Mexicana pulled out of Star Alliance after ending its codeshare relationship with UA last year. They codeshare with AA on a number of routes, but no word on them formally joining an alliance.

I doubt AS will enter an alliance, mainly since it is unclear what additional benefit an alliance would give them they do not already have. They also have a strong codeshare arrangement with AA, and thier Mileage Plan has reciprical arrangements with carriers who belong to both Oneworld (AA, LA, BA, CX, QF) and Skyteam (DL, NW, AF, KL, CO). They also do a lot of feeder traffic up and down the west coast, so there's really not much incentive for them to pair up.

There seems (and correct me if I'm wrong) to be an argument that not joining an alliance offers greater flexibility for airlines to jump in bed with specific airlines they can pick and choose, regardless of membership. Membership in an alliance may tie them to carriers that do not necessarily offer a strategic "fit" in terms of connecting traffic, or generating additional traffic through their primary hubs, and many of the perceived benefits can be realized by these individual arrangements.

Interesting idea. Skyteam seems to be over-saturated in the European & US markets. Building on your idea of CO, Alitalia, Emirates, and Virgin...round up all the Virgin affiliates, plus Malaysian, Avianca or TAM, perhaps TACA as well. Add an African airline (Kenya or Eithopian) and then another unalligned Aisian airline and voila! A fourth alliance.

don't be surprised but among airlines in India, IC and 9W are favourite over AI. As mentioned it is the domestic route which major alliances are looking for and with AI's domestic route almost 0, makes them not so favourite even though they are close to LH. It is far easier for IC and 9W to develop international network than AI to develop domestic, even though it seems to be tinkling with the idea through its subsidiary AIX (AI Express).
