Flying On UAX 2-23... Question

Tue Feb 14, 2006 2:25 am

Hello all,

This will be my first time on an American Carrier post-9/11, and I wanted to know what it would be like...

UAX Operated by Mesa
EWR-IAD
ERJ-145

IAD-CLT
ERJ-145

I know that service levels are low, but do they even serve peanuts?  Smile Any help would be greatly appreciated.

In general, UA will still give you free soda and peanuts/pretzels but maybe not on these flights. There is a cutoff where if a flight is short enough, they don't do a service. The EWR-IAD flight may be too short, but I don't recall off hand what the exact cutoff is. IAD-CLT should have a drink service with snacks, but again, they can sometimes get a little lax on the rules.

According to united.com, all fllights from EWR-IAD on 2/23 are Mesa.

Service levels are fine, and peanuts wont be served. Sad you'll be on an ERJ for you first US flight. Not a great flight to gain impressions of the US airline industry. With peanuts being a problem these days for allergies, they will serve a cookie if anything.

The Express operation for UA at IAD is quite a mess. Having a large Mesa presence is the main culprit, and with all the various regional carriers there, communication is not very good.

You had better hope your flights are on time. UAexpress in IAD won't hold a jet for connecting passengers. Once they know its weather or ATC related, and their hands are clean of it, they will do NOTHING to help stranded travelers by holding flights for even 1 or 2 minutes. I sprinted accross IAD a couple months ago, took the excruciatingly long bus ride to G, and found out they had closed the door about 2 minutes before I got there. Had their been any communication between my slightly weather delayed Shuttle America flight and my connection on to Chatuaqua, I would have easily made my flight. There were even people on the bus with me from the delayed flight calling UA, the IAD airport, etc trying to get someone to tell the G gates that we were on our way.

UA is a great airline, but their current Express setup really sucks at IAD.

That said, I hope you don't have any of my problems, and enjoy flying  Smile

On UA MDT-ORD on a ERJ145, we got a bag of snack mix and a can of soda, in a cup, with ice! No peanuts in the snack mix.

IceTitan,

Do you have issues with the ERJ??? It is a far superior a/c to the CRJ. I try to get the ERJ when I non-rev. Can't stand the CRJ's at all. That does include the -700's.

It's Mesa, of course the operation is going to suck. It is not representative of all the express carriers though. Unfortunately you make your post-911 domestic carrier flight on the worst of all domestic carriers (Mesa).

The good news is that it won't last for long. United is assuming the lease on the old DH gates in A (where UAX used to be). Thank goodness for that!

My favorite domestic carrier is UA, and most of the UAX service is decent, but my issue has to do with the aircraft. A few guys commented on the express area and gates at IAD, and I agree, its like a bus terminal. Having flown on alot of the UAX planes, here is a list of most favorite to dog poo:
1/ ERJ 170/190
2/ CRJ900
3/ CRJ200
4/ ERJ145

Sorry, mate, but that is my opinion. I avoid the ERJ145 at all costs, its just too dang small, especially the two-seat side. Enjoy your ride, nonetheless.

I feel like my feelings have been hurt. The 145 is a far more comfortable ride than the Canadian thing. I enjoy working the 145 and would not go back to the CRJ if I had a choice.

While I agree UA's Express operation at IAD leaves much to be desired, I don't think Ejmmsu's experience is exclusive to UA. I have had similar experiences with AA Eagle (which is a direct subsidiary of AA) at DFW that involved sprinting from C-30something to A-0 only to miss the 15 minute cutoff by 2-4 minutes thanks to delayed flights and getting zero sympathy from the gate agents.

When I flew UAX EWR-IAD a while back, they threw out a quickie drink and biscotti service, although that was before the Mesa takeover.

Happy travels!

Sorry, FutureFO. Just my opinion, I have heard many others share yours in their appreciation for the ERJ145. Now, if you want to talk about the 170/190, very nice aircraft.

I believe there is some wrong information here. Mesa does not operare ERJs for the UAX operation. Its either one of the republic airlines planes or its really a CRJ!

Unless things recently changed!

According to Travelocity and Orbitz and United.com, Boeingguy1's info is correct. I'm looking at it right now.

operated by UNITED EXPRESS/MESA AIRLINES

On an ERJ. UA FLights 7251, 7161, 7390, 7134, 7192

On a CRJ. UA Flight 7374, 7138, 7358

They are also codeshares with US.

Regardless, it clearly states MESA!

Instead of doubting the man, why not look it up?  sarcastic

YV does operate CRJ's on the UA side. I can take a look into Skynet to be sure but as of right now there are CR2's and CR'7's operating for UA.

Unfortuantely on Weblist it does not say which UAX carrier it is. It is just showing the flight number and the load status.

Since this is IAD-CLT, it is very possible that it is operated by US express and shows up as a UA flight due to the codeshare.

Yes, Mesa does now operate ERJ's for UAX. I can definitely assure you of that 100%. I work for another UAX ERJ operator and fly through IAD 20 or more times per week. The planes came over from their USAirways operation in CLT. Registrations are N85_MJ and N86_MJ.

Don't expect the Flight Attendant to get out of their seat, let alone serve you anything.

I was on one of their flights MHT-IAD (double the trip length) and didn't get squat. Mesa is an embarassment. They make Trans States look good.

IAD-EWR is often subject to EWR groundstops, so there is a good chance the flight will be delayed.

Good luck

I wish, when I originally booked it I wanted to fly US EWR-CLT direct, but UA wouldnt let me with my miles...

OOer,
when mesa lost some of the us flying they pimped out the erjs to the other customers...i was under the impression from some air shuttle guys that DL took some and UA took the rest...but ua did take mesa up on the added erj145 flying...dont know about the delta thing
