Positive Impression Of Delta/Ques About Delta MD88

Tue Feb 14, 2006 6:11 am

I know that the general impression of the big legacy carriers is that each one is worse than the other, but I just returned from a weekend trip to Atlanta on Delta (I usually fly American for mileage reasons) and have to say that I found Delta substantially superior. The overall service was better, the crew were friendlier, and more courteous, the cabin was spotlessly clean (we had the new interior aircraft both ways) and they served snacks even on short sectors. I would choose to fly them again.

I had two questions regarding Delta's MD88, on which we travelled both sectors:

1) The legroom appeared to vary between rows- on our outbound we were in row 17, which was more comfortable than our return flight on row 29. Is this so?

2) Are all of Delta's MD80 series aircraft MD88? How many of these types do they have? And how is an MD88 different from an MD80?

Thanks!

The legroom is indeed different, at least on the left (3 seat) side of the aircraft.

The difference point is at the exit rows ... from that point aft, the seat pitch is smaller on the left side.

Best seats in the plane, by far, are on the right (2 seat) side, exit row forward.

Unless you get a FC upgrade, of course ...  Smile

All of DL's MD80s are indeed MD88s. They have around 120 of them (minus any sent off to storage) ...

The main difference between the various flavors is MTOW, range, and engine selection. The MD82 and 88 are virtually identical except for the '88s EFIS flightdeck and a modernized interior.

See here : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_DC-9#MD-80_series and here : http://www.airliners.net/info/stats.main?id=109 for all sorts of groovy details

I have always found that the best seats, with the exception of the exit rows, are row 26D and E, right behind the exits. It seems they always have a little more room than any other rows for some reason and plenty of foot space, but maybe thats just me.

Yes, all of Delta's MD-88's are indeed 88's. No real difference from the 80 as the customer would see it. There are currently 114 in service right now.

Are the MD-90's still in the fleet?

They are indeed. It's a small subfleet, and can't be all that cheap to operate because of that, but there's no other plane (other than the 757s) in DL's arsenal that can as easily deal with the altitudes out of SLC.

Call it a niche aircraft, if you will.

Also ... the fact that there's absolutely zero resale value on them doesn't help much, either ... so they're pretty much staying put.

Yep! I'm not sure where they are flying these days though - here in SEA we used to see them 3x to DFW and many times daily to SLC (now we only see them on 1x daily SEA-SLC).

Glad you liked Delta. Flew them last week on the -88 and love the new interior. Granted it helped that I was in 2A  Wink

As for the econ rows, I also find 29DE and 30DE to have a little extra leg-room.

Earning their keep on flights out of SLC, all 16 of them (okay, there's one single DFW-ATL, but all other flights are from SLC). Of course, 16 is only a small subfleet, but you gotta consider a few points as to why DL keeps them:
-They are owned
-They are still fairly knew, averaging around 14(?) years
-They have more powerful engines than the MD-88 and are hence more suited for the Hot&High conditions at SLC
-They share at least somewhat of a commonality with the MD-88s
-They are popular with pax
-They are rather silent aircraft, which is an advantage at an airport like SNA
-There is no demand for used MD-90s, so DL wouldn't be getting any money for them anyway

Glad to see 'em still operating somewhere, thanks for the info guys. Nobody had mentioned them and the way people were saying the definitive "All MD-80's are MD-88's" I was thinking maybe the MD90 was gone. Yeah I know, a 90 isn't an 80.  Wink

Tornado82 - if you look in the back of Sky magazine it lists the fleet. While the MD90 isn't depicted, it is listed as "Additional aircraft: MD90" right next to the MD88 picture...

They're (the -90s) nice birds flew on one in November for the first time MSY-CVG.

Heh... I used to do that, except now I haven't flown DL for months and months. Nothing against them (except their CRJ's since this is ABE) they just haven't had the right combo of times/fares for me to be lured from CO's ERJ's. However, work is sending me to ATL very soon, so it's a no brainer who I'll be flying.  Smile

The -90's operate out of CVG. Also the -90's have inflight entertainment. Which is a plus to the -88.

The -90s operate out of SLC. If you see them in CVG it's a routing SLC-CVG-XXX. Altho I'm still trying to figure out where the second M90 goes after SLC-CVG seeings as there's no return to SLC that night...

The MD-90 wasn't delivered to DL until 1995. Try 8-9 years old average. But yeah, they are new by aircraft standards.
