Travel Between IAD And The NASM Udvar-Hazy Center?

Tue Feb 14, 2006 2:37 pm

Hi all!!
I'll be travelling to the DC area on business this week and will likely have about 6 hours of downtime between the end of meetings and when I have to board for a return trip home. I was hoping to get to the National Air and Space Museum before I left. I'll arrive in the IAD area by cab.
My question is: Is is possible to walk between the museum and the IAD terminals or should I plan on another cab ride? It's gotta be a short trip and I could see some taxi driver being bitter cause it's so short and refuse to drive me.
I should only have carry-on luggage so that probably wouldn't be a big problem.
If anybody is from the area and could educate this west-coaster, I'd sure appreciate it. Thanks to everybody!!

Travel Between IAD And The NASM Udvar-Hazy Center?

You will have to take another cab. There is no way to walk between the terminal and the museum, nor is there any type of shuttle service between the two. You may want to take the initial cab to the NASM then another one to the terminal once you leave.

My biggest concern is your carry-on. I'm not too sure if the NASM will allow you to take it in there due to security reasons. You may want to check with them to see if they will allow it. I'm sure somebody will have the answer to that.

Taxicabs in the IAD area are NOT allowed to refuse a short trip. If one of them gives you any hassle, ask to speak to their dispatcher.

To avoid confusion, this thread is talking about the Udvar-Hazy Center which is part of the NASM but is not THE NASM which is in Downtown Washington D.C.

Whatever about a cab to Udvar-Hazy Air & Space, a cab to go back to IAD might also be very difficult to find.

Last time I was there, I sat outside, in the sun for about 30 minutes, waiting on the shuttle bus to downtown D.C to arrive.

There were no cabs there, none arrived while I waited either.

Almost all visitors arrived by private car, other than school groups. You are very deep in the woods here, and a very long way from the main road

When I visited I took cabs to and from the terminal. Just call a cab when you are ready to leave. They'll just dispatch one that is sitting at the terminal.

Thank you so much for all your help. I'll check with the museum on the carry-on before I go (Great advice).

One more thing: The cabbie may want from you the $12.00 parking fee collected at the entrance gates to Udvar. It may not apply since it is a drop-off, but check with the museum and the Dulles Flyer cab stand. Come to think of it, the cabbie for the return trip may try to hit you up for another $12 to get the return cab onto the Udvar premises. Check into it.

Smitty,

First welcome to the forum!

As other people said, the NASM is too far to walk from IAD. I visited it with a few friends about a year ago. We actually rented a car for the day (yes, to go from IAD to the NASM and back; pathetic isn't it?) to make sure we didn't get stuck at the NASM waiting for a pickup. Getting to the NASM via cab is not a problem. But, I didn't see any cabs waiting around there. Just make sure you have a number to call when you want to be picked up.

I'll only add one more thing. 6 hours is really not a lot of time for the NASM. There is so much stuff to see! We spent an entire day there and we still didn't see anything!

Anyway, have fun! It's an amazing place and I'm sure you'll enjoy your time there!

When we took a cab we weren't charged for parking in either direction. If they try to charge you then they're probably scamming you.
