Has EasyJet (or FR) Ever Dropped Routes?

Wed Feb 15, 2006 1:35 am

There is a thing i'm quite amazed by...the fact EasyJet(ans Ryanair) have never announced they are dropping routes! The only example I can remeber of was EasyJet dropping ZRH because of too high taxes...

However never seen a single of destinations out of GVA go down..

Would you know which routes have been dropped by EasyJet (or Ryanair )since its creation ?

Yes several times. A few examples

Ryanair
BOH-HHN

Easyjet
GLA-AMS
GLA-EMA
BRS-CPH
NCL-CPH
EDI-EMA

There are many more but can't think of them off the top of my head.

Quoting GSM763 (Reply 1):
Easyjet
GLA-AMS
GLA-EMA
BRS-CPH
NCL-CPH
EDI-EMA

Those CPH routes were also ones where charges were said to be too high, as with ZRH.

Ryanair have also dropped Stansted-Charleroi amongst others and pulled out of the likes of Klagenfurt too.

They drop loads of routes...

Ryanair dropped Liverpool to Brussels

easyJet dropped Liverpool to Luton

Ryanair also pulled out of Rimini, Italy claiming too high airport charges.

A real shame that one; I would have thought it would have been a useful way of shuttling aircraft between hubs.

The real pisser is that easyJet don't do London to Lisbon anymore. TAP and BA are breaking our balls with what they charge on that route. Come back easyJet, in our hour of need.

easyJet never did do Lisbon from London. Go did however operate flights from Stansted to the Portugueuse capital.

In their early days easyJet used to fly from Geneva to Stansted. This was dropped quite rapidly in order to focus on developing Geneva to Gatwick (LGW's first easyjet route).

Of course two major routes which easyJet abandonned were Luton and Gatwick to Zurich due to the latter's airport taxes.

Easyjet as stated above dropped GLAAMS , they originally had 2 daily flts , you could have a good awayday in AMS, they then dropped one flight complaining charges at GLA meant 2 flights not profitable , then when KL upped their service to AMS to 4 a day , dropped the route 27Oct05.
Loads when i flew to AMS appeared to be about 90%, though when i flew 01DEC04 i had booked about 8 weeks before rtn was about £40.00, however glasgow rangers had a fixture in Alkmaar in the Eufa cup announced about 3 weeks after i had booked , within 30mins of the fixture being announced easyjet put the fare up to £379.00 rtn, arent LCC wonderful

R U sure they actually flew between these 2 airports? (And anyways ain't Brussels it's Charleroi  Wink)

From CRL I can actually think off the route to STN which has been dropped since Eurostar and other airlines provided a better service (By landing or arriving closer to Brussels and London) at good prices.

You pay some tax at NQY by putting money in a machine and getting a voucher that you give up at the boarding gate, it was on BBC TV news so must be true.

Route closures get little publicity.

The early history of FR goes back to Waterford Airport but for very many years now they have no services, at all, from there.

(Incidentally, EI were forced to give up LPL to assist FR many moons ago, back in 1990, even though EI had flown there on and off since 1936.
EI resumed flying to LPL in 2004 but are about to end service there in June.)

This was mostly because WF was well established on the route, as well as giving EuroBonus points. Also WF had several daily frequencies, making it possible to get there and back in a day, while FR only had one frequency at an odd time, making it unattractive to business travelers. Who knows what will happen now though, with WF dropping their one daily flight, and BX picking up the route with double daily frequency on a J31. Perfect time for FR to move back in with a "better" plane?

No but even so a lot of people were booked onto the flight and when FR went to launch the Prestwick flight at BOU a lot of buzz passengers turned up protesting about buzz been shut down. I'm guessing maybe that FR have been slow to set up routes too soon after that maybe in fears of passengers not wanting to use the airline. However if the fares are cheap enough people will fly with the airline. It was a big blow for the airport too as they were hoping to build their new terminal but nothing more has been said about that.

In summer 1990 not only were there flights from Galway to Luton but also from Waterford, Cork, Kerry, Shannon, Knock, Sligo and Donegal, ie all the regional airports in the Republic that could handle an ATR42. A British Independent HS748 used to operate the Sligo and Donegal routes at weekends.
