NWA F/A's In Asia... Protected?

Wed Feb 15, 2006 6:12 am

I have some truly wonderful friends in Manila who are working for NWA and supporting big families on tiny paychecks, in the event of a work stoppage will the Manila people be protected? Do they have a union and a strike fund?, I sure hope so.

Only depends on if they are union thru PFAA or not. If they are locals then they may not be protected.

No, the Pacific Division FA's aren't part of the US Seniority system, and aren't protected by the PFAA, which is coincidental, since neither are we apparently, the US based FA's.

It probabaly won't be MNL-based FA's. NW is looking to use outside companies to provide staff in NWA uniforms instead of them actually being NWA employees. The company will likely hire all of it's staff out of China. As for the Europe-US flight's, those would be staffed from India.

Delta already does this for their MAA-based FAs; they use an Indian contracting company for these FAs who only fly DL's MAA-CDG-MAA flights. DL's BOM-base however has FAs who work directly for DL. Ironically, these BOM FAs are actually represented by a union, whereas DL's US-based FAs are not...

On the 9 day DTW-NRT-MNL-NGO-MNL-NRT-PVG-DTW pattern I got off of 3 days ago. The Shanghai-based FA's are not NWA employees, they wear the the same FA uniforms, ID badges, and wings, but they are not employed by NWA. They're from an outside company. This is an experiment, i'm told by Cindy Wu, the director of In-flight Services, Pacific Division, to see if this works. If it does, than all of the Pacific Division will be replaced by these people, on most of (70%)the Interport, Beach and Japan Gateways-CONUS routes. The company is also looking to do this from 100% AMS-India, and 70% from Europe-CONUS. The company tried to do this on the trunk domestic routes too, but the DHS put brakes on that apparently, according to Pat Friend, AFA-CWA president.

Good question, i've been here 11 years, and thought I was safe, secure in the job that I enjoy so much, but now even the Pacific-based crews aren't even safe. They're somewhat happy now because they're getting some seniority when bidding, but they're unaware of what's coming down the pike. I told them what Cindy Wu told me, and they kinda laughed it off, (they believe the high marks that they get will save them). I told them, "you don't know what they're in for, this is NWA".

How is he able to get the inside info on the negotiations that others don't get? While he appears to be very knowledgeable, JetJack74 is not the only NW employee on this board.

hmmm, wow JetJack seems to be privvy to alot of info....

Before you go insulting PFAA and their efforts, they are out to protect the US positions as they have been told to do by its members. If you read the website and negotiations updates and the court proceedings, you'd see this.

The company would surely like to outsource flying to make it cheaper on Europe and Asia roots, but can't unless the union allows it. They have stated clearly many times they won't let that happen as long as the membership states that it is not what they want. Pat Friend and company want one thing from us.....$$$$$....because their membership ranks have diminished. Do you realize NW wants contracts equivalent to what UA or US has?....remember these low wage contracts were negotiated by AFA.

Even if people vote to bring in AFA, it won't change unless we vote new people into our local offices. Isn't it funny how alot of the same PFAA reps were former Teamster reps? All bringing in AFA would do would mean a greater dilution of our funds to an international. The grass is not always greener.

Their actions have warrented insults, and the carelessness and wreckless abandonment in attempts to satisfy the company requirements at the expense of the members they claim to protect

Laughable, The company holds much more power than the PFAA, and Guy Meeks foolish and ego-prompted actions show it as clear as day.

They've promised many things, and most of the promises have been reneged upon.

How? No flight attendant group split form AFA is the last 15+ years. Proof Skyteam.

They didn't give the farm away to UAL in it's negotiations, all of UA's furloughs were voluntary. We lost 667 in the first round.

Wouldn't it be a real pain in the ass for NW to get the infrastructure in place to hire Chinese nationals in China? Seems logical to me to get an outside company to do it... Comparing that to outsourcing flights, trips, or portions thereof presently flown by US-based f/as seems like apples and oranges to me.
