Two Closest Airports In Same City With Air Service

Wed Feb 15, 2006 7:41 am

In a related topic earlier someone asked what are the two closest airports to each other but located in different countries....How about within eyesite of each other in the same city??? I can think of Tampa Florida and St. Petersburg Florida both have airservice and are within site of each other!!!

What about Loganair's LSI-LWK service in the Shetland Islands.
It's only 18nm / 34km.

Maybe SFO/OAK and DFW/DAL would be good candidates. Even LGA/JFK are not far from one another.

But Oakland is a different city than San Fran, otherwise LAX/LGB would work, if you consider Oakland part of San Fran.

Melbourne - International (YMML) and Melbourne - Essendon (YMEN) are only 4nm apart (8km or 5mi for those of you who like to use other units). Essendon has some small RPT services to my knowledge, as well as a fair ammount of charter services. Essendon was Melbourne's original airport before it moved to the current site at Tullamarine.

Since the original question required the 2 airports to be in the same city
I would suggest Berlin's Tegel and Tempelhof airports, even Berlin's other
airport (Schoenefeld) is not that far from Tempelhof.

Also, what about London's Heathrow and City airports?

As long as nobody said it had to be a land based airport I say it is Vancouver, BC. Vancouver Intl. (YVR) and Vancouver Harbor Seaplane (CXH) are 9 statue miles apart. Both have scheduled air service.

Oops I missed the post about MEL. Oh well they're still close.

If DET still had service, then YQG-DET (Windsor, Ontario, to Detroit, MI) would be in the running at 10 miles.

DTW-YQG clocks in at 21 miles.

YYZ-YTZ are 12 miles apart.

I dont think any of your "different city" arguments would work. IAD for example is way out in Sterling, Virginia. While DCA itself is in Arlington. San Francisco airport, while being in "San Francisco" is actually farther from downtown San Francisco than Oakland airport is. Dallas Ft. Worth Airport is in its own city technically "DFW Airport, Texas... 75261", now it would be funny if there was an airport built to serve the city of "DFW Airport" lol. London Gatwick Airport is officially in West Sussex, UK... while Heathrow is in Harlington, Middlesex. Barcelona BCN is in El Prat, Spain. San Jose Costa Rica Juan Santamaria Airport is in Alajuela, Costa Rica. EZE Buenos Aires is in Ezeiza, Argentina. BOS Boston is in East Boston. And so on. While yes Oakland and San Francisco and San Jose are different cities, you have to be pretty stupid to argue that they serve 100% different areas. Same goes for LAX/LGB/SNA/ONT/BUR, as well as LGA/JFK/EWR.

Actually, it is now in the City of Dulles, VA

Quoting TWA902fly (Reply 22):

That is the zip code. Many airports and large entities like universities have their own zip code. DFW can't technically be in a singe city because it stradles the line between Tarrant and Dallas Counties. SEA, however, is now actually in the City of Seatac which was created to support the airport and was named for the Airport's shortening (Seattle/Tacoma International, refered to by locals as SeaTac)

Quoting TWA902fly (Reply 22):
while Heathrow is in Harlington, Middlesex

Which is within Greater London. The entire county of Middlesex is now part of the Capital, it only still exists for postal purposes)

Quoting TWA902fly (Reply 22):
Same goes for LAX/LGB/SNA/ONT/BUR, as well as LGA/JFK/EWR.

LAX is actually the only commercial airport that is actually within the city limits of Los Angeles (though ONT technically is because the City of Los Angeles owns it). VNY is also within the city as is Whiteman Airpark (I think). The other 4 are in different cities. LGA and JFK are actually within New York City, while EWR isn't even in the same state.

Actually, that gives me an idea for a new thread

That is a lot of research, but JFK and LGA are in the same city. and EWR is operated by the Port Authority and is not that far. If you use the airport code NYC when searching for fares on some sites. It will look into all three and sometimes even ISP

Indeed. In fact, they are both in Apodaca (within Monterrey Metro area, but not actually within Monterrey municipality). MTY and NTR are 10 mi apart, but NTR only gets biz flights. However, there was some interest by Interjet to fly there instead of MTY.

NAS North Island and Lindbergh Field in San Diego are only about a mile apart. I know, I know, North Island is a military base, but it gets frequent mainline visitors and indeed an AN-124 comes in today at 1:27pm and hopefully it will shoot the Lindbergh approach on RWY 27 and make a 90 degree left hand turn onto RWY 18 at North Island ala Kai Tak. Can't get better than that!

Here in southeastern Virginia we have ORF and PHF within 27 miles.

If you add military we have ORF and PHF for commercial and Oceana (NTU), Langley and Chambers Field (Naval station Norfolk) all within about a 30mi radius.

I would say Tijuana and Brown Field.........you can see the control towers from one to another, physically both are in two different countries but are only a couple of miles apart.
