JetBlue Chartered North American Airlines Flights

Thu Feb 16, 2006 9:36 am

Not sure if anyone else posted this, but yesterday JetBlue chartered a North American Airlines 757 to fly two RT flights between JFK-FLL to get all the passengers affected by the blizzard to their destinations.

On those flights, Jetblue ensured that customers had "the JetBlue experience" by catering the flights with all standard JetBlue beverages, snacks, and gave customers headsets (I imagine they must have movies onboard?). They also sent a JetBlue inflight supervisor on board to ensure customers had the same experience.

I wonder why they didn't just run extra flights of their own? When I went past the airport yesterday, they had a spare aircraft parked by Terminal 4!

JetBlue actually has been running extra sections in the evenings when aircraft would rather RON in a city. The majority of the extra sections were NY-FL runs... with the exception of the above mentioned charter I don't believe they chartered any other aircraft from other air carriers.

I'm sure that NAA appreciated the business, and that's an interesting report. Of course, given that NAA does a lot of work for the US military and high-end VIP charters, creating the JetBlue experience snackwise probably isn't that big a challenge. The military and VIP charters can involve some pretty darn impressive catering. I seem to recall some real compliments to NAA for the food provided when they did the Bush campaign plane and some press charters, for example. (Miami Air, as well, is known for being able to arrange some truly stellar catering; ATA used to have an L1011 that was all-first-class with a stand-up bar, seatside carving, etc, and provided some outstanding meals on the short-lived Pleasant Hawaiian Holidays nonstop L1011 flights from JFK-HNL and ORD-HNL; World's catering on the Sonair flights to and from Africa is extravagant, and on and on.) Bottom line, on a carrier like that, you can pretty much have anything you are willing to pay for, and the aircraft have the galleys to handle it.

But it's a smart move by JetBlue to roll out the Blue stuff, and shows a commitment, at least by management, to customer service.

As to why they didn't fly their own metal, it could be: (1) a lack of *serviced* aircraft; (2) crew availability issues given the irregular operations of the previous days.

Best,

Bill

PS I will be nice and not mention that the service that I received on at least one JetBlue flight was crap, including the f/a's refusal to bring my seatmate a soft drink because "we're serving water now". I'll take the suggestions of the posters here that JetBlue is focusing on regrooming the bad apples and trying to create some consistency in the face of the fast expansion. On the other hand, I don't remember seeing any advertising or publicity recently touting Neeleman's promise that actual service will be provided and that you won't get a dirty look and resentment if you push the f/a call button -- because it was service suicide to do so on at least one of my flights, just like most other airlines.

One of my friends was on that plane an she said it was pretty disgusting, it was dirty and all and since there were no tv's or movies or anything, it was boring. But when her family arrived in JFK they called B6 and they gave them each $25 vouchers for putting up with it. Sounds good on B6's part.
She was displaced by storm, she was supposed to come back Sunday night and was going to come back on another B6 flight Wednesday (That is when they scheduled them) but they got on this one instead.

She was bored because there were no TVs?!

What is wrong with people today? Isn't it like a 2 hour flight? Read a freakin' book!

People were expecting to be on Jetblue, so they didn't think they needed a book....

Exactly. When you book on jetBlue you well expect to fly jetBlue not North American and get dirty planes and no jetBlue stuff at all exept the food they brought on. Besides when you 15 you don't want to just read a book on the plane, its not normal.

More later I got to run now.

Definately report the flight attendant service issue- it'll get fixed. I just returned from a JFK-SJC round trip and the flight attendants on both legs encouraged passengers to use the call button-- and both ways, people were smiled at upon pressing the button.

If an F/A gave you attitude, REPORT IT! The problem will most definately be resolved.

I'm delighted to hear that, and I'm delighted to see so many B6 employees encouraging a customers to help weed out a bad apple. It would be a more typical response to defend the conduct. Shows pride in the operation. Kudos!

I've been on North American Airlines flights. On a military charter B767. It was horribly cramped with 8 abreast seating: 2+4+2. Ahhh, the perfect Jet Blue experiance  Wink

That has always struck me as an odd layout, and I'll be interested to see if their 2 new 767s will be reconfigured to that challenging configuration. Their 757s, on the other hand, are traditional 3+3. However, they put 2.5 rows more seats in theirs than do ATA (215 vs. 200), which has 32-33" pitch, so they have to be looking at 30"-31" pitch, unless the galley/lav arrangement is adjusted to give them more room.

I was on the JFK-FLL flight. As far as I could tell, there were no jetblue staff flying down with us. Here is the trip report:

Gee, you noticed that.  Smile

However, you will also notice that I wasn't just ranting about the crappy service, but also saying that at least some folks had previously said that my experience was unusual, and the subsequent postings from the JetBlue folks confirmed that they were indeed working on these things. So...it was indeed better for me to be nice than nasty.

No offense, but I think you're ignorant to contemporary teen lifestyles. Most teens prefer to watch TV over to read. That's just how it is. I'm not saying that teens don't read, but when given an option to either read or watch TV, that person will most likely watch TV.

Don't make JetBlueAtJFK feel like an idiot.

Not normal? So being literate is not normal in our society? I reiterate (Sorry, I know using big words is "not normal"): What is wrong with people today?!

Your a college student, you can honestly tell me that most of the people in your college read books that aren't assigned?? Have you ever heard of Cliff's Notes, why are they so popular?

Bottom line, regardless of your opinion that teens should be reading, most of them don't. JB@JFK is correct. Most watch TV, play video games, surf the internet, listen to music (on their MP3 player not walkman ). The only time most of them are reading a book is when they are assigned it as homework.

I'vernbeen reading on planes since I knew how to. Sorry, I have no sympathyrnfor those who had to "cope" with a two hour flight without TVs. Besidesrnthe first post says they movies on board? It's JFK-FLL, not JFK-NRT. Deal with it.

No way. AMC requirement is for movies to be shown on flights longer than 2 hours. Thus the 757 had TV's they were just the kind over the aisle. As far as the plane being dirty, it couldn't have been horrible, but its hard to keep the planes clean this time of year given the locations that they are known to frequent. (Wet sand on boots = dirty carpet)
