was DL's original Frequent Flyer program any different than SkyMiles? Did elite status have different names (Silver Medallion, Gold, etc)?
I believe Delta's original frequent flier program was called, "Delta Frequent Flier Program" and did not have the different levels it has today. It was introduced when everyone else did it to keep competitive and reward your loyal frequent fliers. Nowadays, its pointless, because everyone has an account on everyone. There is no "frequent flier" for the most part for one airline. Back when I started with Delta, I asked a lady if she wanted to add Delta Skymiles and answered yes, but pulled out a card with FF
numbers for every airline you could think of. DL
, US, AS
, and HA
. I pulled up her account, it was 9 years old with about 4,000 miles accrued. Yea, thats a frequent flier alright.
As far as elite programs, I don't think there was one initially. If you were a preferred customer and male, you got the title "Flying Colonel" and if you were female, "Flying Orchid." Later, DL
started Skymiles and instituted the 3 tiers of FF
elites. Platinum Medallion(PM), Gold Medallion(GM), and Silver Medallio(FO). Don't ask me how the Flying Orchid initials got attached to the Silver Medallion level, I have no idea.
