Anyone Done LAX-JFK On Qantas?

Thu Feb 16, 2006 6:05 pm

Qantas QF 107 (A 744) continues on to JFK after landing in LA. This must be the only 747 service in the domestic United States. Has anyone been on this flight? Is there a meal service? Do the PTV's work on this segment?

Flown it as a nonrev a few times. Indeed get breakfast and then a light snack prior to landing in NY. (atleast in F & C class)
PTV/IFE works like normal.

Can only fly on it if connecting to/from a QF flight to BNE/SYD/MEL/AKL. It Operates 3 x weekly ( 5 x weekly - eff end of FEB). Flew it last FEB on a FRI service and the flight was quite full (albeit FRI is the busiest flight of the week for it).

Yes, you cannot buy a ticket on this flight without a connecting QF flight, UNLESS it is a non-rev ticket, which is what makes my non-revving self curious. Full is not good though. I will make sure to check the loads then before going. I did not know they were expanding it to 5 times per week so soon. I guess that's all the better!

UA occasionally runs its 744s on domestic routes. Typically, this occurs as part of plane re-positioning between hubs.

Flew SYD-LAX-JFK-LAX-SYD 2 weeks ago in J class. It's a full service flight from LAX-JFK with full lunch service and PTV's avail in all classes. On the return JFK-LAX was provided with a dinner service and had a AVOD aircraft, so was able to watch what I wanted when I wanted. Most enjoyable way of flying across the USA. Do have to have an online connection from Australia or New Zealand to use this service. Will be good to see this flight return to 5 days a week. Both flights I was on were quite full in both F & J class, nice to see some decent loadings from JFK. Thanks

I know that this summer, QF will extend its SYD-SFO service to YVR. But I wonder if QF will move that flight to LAX so it has better connection opportunities.

There was some talk a couple of weeks ago on Flyertalk that the LAX-JFK porsion of the QF flight CAN be booked with an award ticket through One World.

I wonder if SFO-YVR can carry local traffic as it is not US domestic like LAX-JFK ?

I flew QF107 LAX-JKF in F, connecting from QF MEL-LAX, on 4th Jan. Upgraded from J. Service was tremendous. Food great. Excellent view out both sides due to curvature of the nose section in the 744. A really special experience to have great QF service continue across the US all the way to NY. Chose my dates so as to avoid AA!

No, it isn't. El Al uses 744s on select days on MIA-EWR and ORD-EWR, though, like Qantas, they can't carry local revenue traffic. The MIA flights end in March since MIA-TLV goes non-stop, but at that time both of the two weekly O'Hare flights become 747s. Also, EVA flies EWR-SEA with a 744, and United uses 744s on a handful of hub-to-hub routes during select times, usually in the summer, to position 744s.

People have pondered this thread in the past and it was once suggested that what would stop you (besides money) if you wanted to fly a domestic Qantas flight from buying a ticket from JFK to MEL and just getting off at LAX and never reboarding.

Again, I know you have to be a through passenger to travel on to New York (and Back, etc..), but I am talking about a Non- Rev Ticket. I checked it on the GoZed website and the specific section LAX-JFK on QF is available. I assume that you don't have to be a through passenger as a non - rev for this reason. Please correct me if I am wrong.

You can fly it in conjuntion with any international trip. I had the opertunity to fly it LAX-JFK to connect with LAN JFK-LIM. However the fare was an extra $2,000 to add this segment. So I stuck with the AA leg as my return J class ticket to LIM was only $1,600. Its a bit difficult to book but it can be done.

I think thats accurate because technically its not revenue--just like you can book Southwest Rapid Reward tickets from Love Field anywhere.

Does anyone know if the crew still layover in JFK or they do an LAX-JFK turn? I remember they had issues with the FA unions over this. If memory serves me correctly, the FAs want to layover in JFK (who wouldn't?) but company wants them to do stay in LAX. I think at one point (or maybe they still do) use the Auckland based QF crew to fly this route because they are not under the same union rules.

That's probably why the service was excellent  Smile (OK, I won't start a NZ vs. Oz debate)

That's a very interesting question. Between the 6 hour flight each way, and three hour turn, I'd imagine they layover at JFK but who knows....

Well, the outbound is only 4.5 hours, but I am betting they do lay over in JFK

Cabin crew do not slip in JFK. Except when QF108 got stuck in the damn snow at JFK 12Feb.

I remember having the same cabin crew on a wednesday SYD-LAX service in J class and them having them back on the Friday JFK-LAX service two days later, so they must have stayed in LAX two days. That was in FEB last year. So they must have a couple of days in between doing the long sector and just do a LAX-JFK return on one day as V Jet suggested above recently.

Stupid question. If you are on a RTW ticket and arrive on QF in LAX and stopover, can you use it? Or does it have to be a straight connexion?

cheers

See reply 15, it can be done in conjunction with any international trip. It does NOT have to be a QF connection and I dont think there is a limit on the stopover time, PROVIDED it is within the conditions of the ticket held.
