VS Carry-on Question

Fri Feb 17, 2006 3:53 am

I am a virgin when it comes to flying on VS, and here is my quick question... flying premium economy BOS-LHR... understand limitation of a 6 kg carry-on piece, but what about laptop computer? Will I be allowed a laptop case in addition to my 6 kg cabin piece? Website does not mention this... what is the laptop computer policy on trans-Atlantic routes from those experienced with flying on VS?

I know Lufthansa lets you have a laptop as an extra carry on, not sure about VS but it should be the same.

I really need info specific to VS... just spoke to a phone agent who spent quite a bit of time typing into his computer, and the best he could tell me was that it is at the discretion of the airport personnel, and I should perhaps try to keep my actual carry-on "really light."

I just want to know what happens day after day with regard to laptops in actual practice on Virgin flights.

Last May I was able to get on with a carry-on and a bag of duty-free items. One went under my seat, the other in the overhead bin. I think you'll be OK.

Keep it on your lap, and you should be fine  Silly. To be honest, in all my hours of flying, I've never had my hand luggage checked...

May I suggest that you check Virgin's website. I found this on their site

Premium Economy & Economy

You are allowed to carry one piece of hand luggage onto the plane. This must be able to fit under the seat in front of you, which means it must not be larger than 23cm x 36cm x 56cm (9in x 14in x 22 in) and should not weigh more than 6kg (13lbs).

Wheelchairs, crutches, baby buggies and items necessary for baby care during the flight will be carried free over and above the baggage allowance. Baby buggies, carrying baskets and wheelchairs will normally be carried in the hold.

The UK Civil Aviation Authority requires all UK airlines to review and enforce their regulations regarding the acceptance and carriage of cabin (hand) baggage. We ask you to help us meet the regulations to make your flight more enjoyable. Space on any aircraft is at a premium and hand baggage should contain only items you require during the flight. There may be occasions when even having met size and weight limitations there is not enough room. In this event baggage will be checked and loaded in the hold. We ask for your understanding on those rare occasions.

I know... I read the website... thanks anyway. But I really want to hear from people who actually fly VS... the laptop is such a common fixture nowadays... obviously laptops are not checked as luggage, and its stands to reason that most folks on a long journey have a basic piece of cabin luggage, so what happens to those ubiquitous laptops on Virgin?

I am not asking for opinions, just asking for first hand knowledge!

i frequently have issues with my carry on being overweight regardless if i am in PE or upper class (hey, i'm not a light packer).

in PE i have in the past taken a small bag (like the size of a large womans purse) and laptop and been fine.

often, my single carry on in a large tote that my laptop fits into-and while overweight WITH my laptop in it, i havent been hassled about the laptop. this is all done at check-in though, so it is resolved before you even head through security.

If you are flying from the US, the USA agents rarely check hand luggage, so you should be fine. Officially you are able to carry 6kgs of hand luggage in addition to your laptop. However, the laptop must be in its own separate case.
You can carry:
1 x 6kg of hand luggage
1 x laptop

If you explain to the check in agent that you have your laptop for business, you should not have any problems. Well thats the rule at LHR anyway so it should apply to all stations.

You are also traveling in Premium economy and their is plenty of space in that cabin to store your items.

Good luck
