First Widebody Airbus To AY

Sat Feb 18, 2006 1:46 am

Finnair's CEO confirmed in a Finnish business paper that AY will get their first Airbus widebody (used) already by the end of this year, as suitable Md-11s aren't available. At the moment they have 7 Md-11s.

My wild guess is that the Airbus will start flying HEL-JFK.

But TG is retiring this year and next its MD11 fleet. Why AY not purchase these aircrafts??

And RG MD11 fleet??

I thought AY was retiring their MD-11s too, even though I'd heard they had been happy with them, in general. When is KLM going to set down their MD-11 fleet? They are flying the MD-11 on SFO-AMS, I can't help but think a 777 would be cheaper...and preferable on that route.

IIRC KL will fly the M11 until 2015

Seems A340 will not be their first widebody Airbus.

AY said their Md-11s will be retired by year 2012, and yes they have been happy with them (especially with the cargo capacity) but now Airbus widebodies will replace MadDogs. AY has plans to expand strongly in Asia, this year to Nagoya and Delhi.

Good question, I also don't know where AY will get this A343 from. Maybe from SA? I seem to remember reading something about SA and their A343 aircraft going to another airline, was this related to AY getting the A343?

Hi Boeingguy, no that it is the AY logo on the A300 engine.

AY used to have A300 for holiday (charter) flights early 90's.

By the way is the first A343 coming later this year or in 2007?

If I had to wager, HEL-NRT maybe a start for the A343 because the A343 can land on the shorter runway and take-off on the longer runway. This will allow AY to double frequency from two a week to four. Slots on the shorter runway should still be available in the mornings. MD-11 could stay on the NGO & KIX runs as they have no slots and runway issues.

Toulouse, France would be a good guess and a place to start.

My first guess would be from AC, since they'll get rid of them very soon, once their 77W and 772LR fleet goes online.

That would apply for the A340-313Es they ordered. However they are apparently getting another few used A340-313Xs for expansion, since they are unable to acquire more MD-11s.

It would be sad to see the Mightydog leave AY for good. And considering that AY, one of the few original MD-11 launch customers who didn't cancel their orders for the Mightydog, has been the airline that got the very first MD-11 delivered, it's been quite a long run. Once the last MD-11 leaves AY, some 22 years will have passed since the first delivery of their first Mightydog.

Yes, and I read that they are planning to open routes from HEL to MNL, KUL, ICN...
I also heard somewhere that they are planning to open to SGN...

So NRT has an extra short runway where only a few types can land ??? And they distribute slots only for that runway ??  Confused  Confused
Any explanations are welcome to me !!

Hello Andaman!

Can you give your source please. Because I just read in Finnair Group's personnel magazine, Okay, that the first A340 will be delivered in May 2007 and it will be a new one. I know that there have been rumours of a used A340-300 joining the AY fleet this year but there aren't so many A340-300s available at this moment. It can be that AC might get rid of them soon but I suppose not so soon..

It was business paper Kauppalehti, Friday 17th if I remember right, they said the used Airbus widebody would come in the second half of this year, instead of the 8th Md-11.

Okay, thanks! It is true that they need planes for the long haul operations and I hope they'll find some soon.

Happy landings!

Great news if they do that (introduce an A340 to Japan); I'm hoping to arrange a trip to Japan during the transitional period (from MD11s to A340s), from MAN. If I work it properly, I can combine E-170s and A319s on the short flights!

I think AC would be a strong possibility; I heard they were looking at getting rid of one or two A340s later in the year.

By the way, have you heard anything about AY returning to DUB; they used to operate a Summer seasonal service, but they don't seem to be coming back this Summer. There's a strong increase in Irish long haul traffic to Asia, so it's the kind of place they should look at; E-jets would be ideal ...

Hello Kaitak!

Finnair will be flying to Dublin on 13.4-30.9 mainly with A319. I think they have 3 flights/week, but I'm not sure.

The shorter runway at NRT is only 2,180 meters. NRT has decided DC-10s, MD-11s, 773s, A346s, & 747s + soon A380 are not to be operated from that runway. In emergencies, (like longer runway shutting down) I have heard DC-10s, MD-11s, and 773s landing on it.
Therefore, I make the assumption, that with morning slots on the short runway still open, AY can double their frequencies into NRT with just a change in aircraft.
