Pricing Boeing And Airbus

Sat Feb 18, 2006 7:11 am

Leeham Company has an article on how Boeing and Airbus price their aircraft.

Below is the list price ($) and estimated discount (%) by Airline Monitor Magazine:

B737 $65 29.50%
B744 $221 24.35%
B767 $133 31.00%
B777 $212 31.00%
B787 $141 25.60%

A320 $70 34.60%
A330 $167 32.70%
A350 $171 27.00%
A343 $188 37.23%
A346 $212 31.60%
A380 $292 34.60%

There are, of course, stories around the industry that discounts are occasionally even deeper.

Thank you for posting. We can argue all day long whether or not its "gospel", but at least its a data point for future reference.

Yes, the article states:

Quote:
Richard Aboulafia of The Teal Group issued his estimates of the average prices paid per aircraft family. Comparing them to those issued in November by Ed Greenslet in his Airline Monitor magazine shows they are fairly close in agreement.

The list prices of those models which have the version specified look pretty accurate and consistent to what I have as information. However, as the difference on the A343 and A346 suggests, it might be worth splitting out the other models too...
Some diversification of the figures for the Airbusses:

Quoting BoomBoom (Thread starter):
A330 $167

A330-200 goes for around $160 and the A333-300 at $175, also the discount is too high, currently no A330 for delivery before mid 2008 goes away with a discount higher than 28%...

Quoting BoomBoom (Thread starter):
A350 $171

A350-800 at $162 and A350-900 at $178

One I find off by quite a bit is the A320.

Quoting BoomBoom (Thread starter):
A320 $70

A318 starts at $50 and the A321 tops out at $78, with the A320 itself at $64, so this average is on the high side...

Anybody cares to split out the Boeing models?

I think that these are the closest numbers that we will ever get...they certainly seem to indicate roughly how much each airline pays. The only one I find a bit high is the 777. Why would it be the highest discounted (% wise) plane when it is selling like hotcakes?

well look what I dug up!! actual contract prices CI paid for 744s and A333s in their financial report. look at page 54!
http://www.china-airlines.com/en/about/2004e.pdf

to all those who said I was full of .... for saying they paid 80 million for a A333 , I apologize profusely! I suspect that since these prices are almost list price, they may include significant spares/training packages.

all I know is whats in the link, if you check previous year reports at their website, you find they paid 60 something million for their 738s and 160 for A343. They seem to like to use the term aggregate price for the contracts which again leads me to think the price quoted in the reports is not just for the plane itself but everything else related to it also. Their history is also to use single banks to finance individual planes so the 80 something million for a A333 may still be the price of the plane itself an maybe even less the engines which for a A333 are probably 10 mil a piece.

That could be the reson why it is selling like hotcakes.
