Strange WN Diversion Today

Sat Feb 18, 2006 11:15 pm

In poking around on Flightaware I found a WN flight (8501) apparently headed from DAL to PHL which was probably some sort of positioning flight or charter. The flight shows diverted and now it's headed to SDF, my home airport. No big deal of course, but interesting none the less.

Cheers,
John

From the looks of it (with my limited info here) 8501 was a positioning flight to make up a flight out of PHL this morning (2600 PHL-PIT-MDW) due to an aircraft out of service from yesterday (A/C 316). 8501 (A/C 396) diverted to SDF due to MX, and therefore 2600 was cxld today. 396 is ferrying back to DAL this afternoon.

OPNL..correct me if I am wrong here....or just give me a call=)

Don't know, since I'm off today...

As an aside, not every position ferry makes it from A-B as planned. About a year or to ago, I had an aircraft that had just come back into service after a mechanical at LIT, and it was to ferry LIT-PHX. Over ABI, we had another aircraft breakdown in LAS, and I sent the guy from overhead ABI to LAS to cover that out of service aircraft. Shortly thereafter, the LAS aircraft was fixed, but another had gone out of service at ABQ, so my ferry (which was now about 25nm south of ABQ at FL350) was sent there, arriving mere minutes after the other aircraft broke. I'm sure some folks were left to believe that we had empty 737s flying around as spares, ready to drop-in somewhere at a moment's notice. Not true, of course, but that's just the way it worked out this times. There have been other times when aircraft ferrying home from a concluded charter operation have been utilized in the same way...
