US Airlines To Muslim Countries

Sun Feb 19, 2006 12:15 am

Its remarkable that no US airlines currently serve Muslim countries*, as defined here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Majority_Muslim_countries

It can’t be for economic reasons. The 57 countries of the Islamic world have 1.4 billion people and contain most of the planets’ fossil fuel reserves. They have some of the world’s most vibrant cities like DXB. The oil /gas business alone should generate enough traffic.

If its from fear of terrorism, then its very sad to see US carriers driven out of these markets. European airlines haven’t been deterred although they’re just as likely to be targeted. Even LY flies to some muslim countries.

Pan Am and TWA used to straddle the globe, but times have changed.

Has all this happened since Sept 11?

In Scandinavia to, at least in Denmark, airlines have stoped flights to the Middle-east after the cartoon outrage due to the danger of sabotaging planes.

Delta will start ATL-DKR-JNB in December. Senegal has a Muslim majority, and is on the Wiki list.

Although India is only 10% Muslim, a population of more than 100,000,000 Muslims makes it one of the largest Muslim counties, too. AA, CO, DL and NW all serve India.

It's a shame but I always giggle when I see that stupid Worldwide Service thing on United planes. I think they mean Worldwide Service the way the baseball leagues talk about the "World" Series. Never mind Muslim countries, what about Mother Africa (and yes, DL are finally addressing this, albeit with a lone 767)?

I don't know if it's fear of terrorism that keeps US carriers out of much of the world, I just don't think the numbers are there to sustain service to more exotic places. Look at the route maps of European airlines by comparison, the number of longhaul destinations served in Africa is phenomenal.

I saw a ATI dc-8 in Fujairah, a few Atlas B747 in DXB and Sjarjah just three week ago! I know these are all cargo-dogs! Passenger wise our KLM flight had also a CO and NW flight number. It was a MD-11 carrying many Americans and also Norwegians! I would like to add that there were no delays on KLM and even other posts say that the MD-11 are less reliable, I found the MD-11 with the 2-4-3 seating comfortable. Maybe the MD-11 is under rated?

Nothing to do with the "clash of civilisations" lark. It's simple really, the distance is big, the market not massive, and most importantly there are large markets on the way that have stronger links with the muslim world. So it makes more sense to codeshare with partners from a intermediary point, in the case of the Middle East, Europe, in the case of SE Asia, Asia/Pacific

DL in late 2001 suspended its flights to CAI + DXB and has not yet resumed.

No U.S. Airlines to the Middle East? It has to do with competing against government subsidized airlines in the Middle East that provided a better product that caused U.S. airlines to leave. Add the enormous threat of terrorism and you have no aircraft with passengers flying a U.S. flag on their tail landing anywhere in the region.

Sad but probably a good thing. All we need is some Middle Eastern terrorist with a United Airlines logo in his sights salivating at the thought of killing some "infidel" airliner.

Very substantial portions of the world are not served directly by any US airline, most of which is not "Muslim". They code-share - just like New Zealand and Australian airlines do. Good economics. Most "Christian" countries are not served by NZ or QF or any one country's airlines for that matter. Why on earth a US airline would want to serve most of the world I would not know. They are struggling to do what they do already.

UA along with DL, NW, CO, World, North American, ATA etc fly almost daily into KWI.
With the charter carriers doing ops into BAH frequently.

then why do European carriers fly to all those countries filled to the brim with their countrymen/women??

there are tens of thousands of US citizens in Saudi, Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, Egypt, etc...

foreign citizens are treated very nicely and with respect.......

for all the crap I hear in the media, thousands of "westerners" are going to the Middle East/Asia to spend money, buy property, have vacations, etc.

when this idiotic administration gets out of office, we'll one day see US-air carriers fly to middle east countries such as DXB, CAI, KHI/ISB, etc.

mabye you need to stop watching Fox News 24/7

Maybe it's because they're not allowed to (just speculating). Since many arab airlines may not be allowed over US soil (still speculating) it may make sense for arab countries not to allow US airlines in their airports.
