Small Plane Crashes Onto Chicago Expressway

Mon Feb 20, 2006 5:05 am

A small plane crashed Sunday afternoon onto an expressway in suburban Chicago, authorities said.

The plane crashed around 12:40 p.m. on the Elgin-O'Hare Expressway less than a mile from the Schaumburg Airport, said Illinois State Police spokesman Lt. Lincoln Hampton, who could not provide any information on possible injuries.

Witnesses told WBBM-AM that drivers on the highway stopped, got out of their cars and helped pull the pilot from the plane, which did not hit any vehicles when it crashed onto the eastbound lanes. Witnesses said the pilot, who was alone in the plane, had a head wound and appeared coherent.

Apparently they had an engine failure and had to make an emergency landing. Good to hear that they didn't hit anybody - that's a big concern when landing on a highway near a major city.

Actually there were two in the plane, the instructor and a student. The student also said that he loves flying and would get back into the cockpit. Scary ride from the pics on the local news and it is amazing that they were able to walk away. Guess it was lucky that it was a Sunday afternoon and not one of the busier expressways.

On the news tonight, they stated the plane took off without fuel Makes sense, as there was no fire with a smashed wing and overturned plane. This statement was coming from, I believe, from the flight school.

Now, it would have been poetic justice if the plane landed on that chicago mayor who, like a phantom in the night, bulldozed Meigs field.

Then perhaps the arguement could have been made that had Meigs been there, the plane would have landed fine.

There is no justice though.

Maybe the kid should rethink his career if he's too lazy to check the fuel.

Mirrodie As a moderator I would expect better of you! First, Schaumburg is to the northwest of Chicago. What would Meigs have to do with this flight??? I think the important thing here is NEVER take anything for granted in your preflight! It was lucky no one was killed or seriously injured.

I would have laughed. Then mourned. Then laughed for quite a bit longer.

Me too, minus the mourning.

The media always says it was out of fuel when the engine quits. When they have nothing else to report, they make it up.

We used to have a 152 at our flight school that was notorious for running out of fuel. A friend of mine took it up one day for an hour in the practice area. They checked the fuel and estimated that they had 3 hours of fuel remaining at departure. On the way back in the engine quit and they had to make a forced landing. Less than 0.5 gal was found in the airplane. Several times later this same airplane would come in after being topped off prior to only have 1 gal left upon arrival from a 2 hour flight. Maintenance never could find a leak or signs that the fuel mixture was too rich. In the end, this airplane ended up killing 3 people when of all things, it ran out of fuel and had to make a night forced landing on a highway. It had a head on collision with a minivan killing the pilot and the 2 people in the minivan. That little plane was a mystery but sometimes airplanes do weird things.

You missed the point. Anyone that is from Chicago and likes anything to do with Aviation hates Daley for a variety of reasons. CGX would be the biggest one.

This is very true. Although they quote the owner saying it was out of fuel, they probably just rode that to the bank.

They also mention the fuel tanks are selectable by the pilot, and that one tank may have had fuel in it, but was not in use. It's been awhile since I flew a Warrior but I think I remember there being a 'Both' on the selection for tanks. Can someone confirm this for me?
