Hmm I think someone was messing around wikipedia.... The MD83 definetely cannot fly nonstop from BAQ to JFK. If it did, it would be extremely payload restricted, thus making the flight unprofitable.

They are not starting the route this summer. They applied for it with the CAA, IIRC, but that does not nessecarily mean they will start it. I doubt they will.

Though on a related topic, rumour has it AA will be flying MIA-PEI by the end of the year. I wonder if AV will protect their turf and follow.

I thought the next move AA was going to make here was to re-open BAQ. Never thought of PEI.

Do they still have problems with BAQ employees?

No, they will not be re-opening BAQ. AA is tentatively planning on starting MIA-CTG and MIA-PEI in 2006 or 2007. It will be 3x weekly to CTG/4x to PEI on alternating days.

I do believe that AV will indeed start PEI-BAQ-JFK with an MD83 this year. This route, together with LAX and BCN, the airline is committed to.

I heard Fabio Villegas, Avianca's CEO, on a radio interview where he was confirming intentions for these, starting them around mid-year.

I myself wonder whether the MD83 is a suitable aircraft for a flight that is over 4 hours from BAQ to JFK, and as I undertood, AV was doing a feasibility study. BAQ is a hot airport, but it is at sea level.
I do know that UK charter Airtours (now MyTravel) used this aircarft type on UK-Tenerife routes that are similarly long.

Incidently, in the radio interview, Mr Villegas also mentioned that AV are intending to increasing frequencies to Mexico and Buenos Aires to 1 daily (EZE used to be served together with SCL in a triagular flight, but it went to non-stop at a reduced frequency of 4/7). He also said that Quito will be increased to 4 a day.
BCN should be served, probably via ALC, from July.

Avianca used to fly MD83's on the BAQ-JFK-BAQ routes in 1992 through 1994. even though they were restricted in passenger load to compensate the large amounts and volume of luggage, it has an average duration of flight of approximately 4:20.

Not fixing necessary! It's all quite accurate on AV's case!

I definetly saw Avianca MD-83's at JFK operating from/to BAQ over 10 years ago, but maybe with a tech-stop in MIA? I think they were nonstop, however. Anyway, is 6 1/2 hrs in an MD-83 from Colombia to JFK bearable? I could deal with it in the 707-727 and 757 eras but in an MD-83? It just seems a bit too claustrophobic for my taste...

At DL we work so hard to balance our Mad Dogs to get from JFK to ATL when they are full. I don't wish that AV flight on any load planner. The plane is just not suitable for the flight.

PEI-BAQ: 1hr 25mins
BAQ ground: 45mins
BAQ-JFK: 4hrs 20mins

Total: 6hrs 30mins

And I can't imagine you can get off the plane in BAQ to walk around; I've flown MDE-BOG-BAQ-JFK without being able to deplane...it is NOT a nice feeling!

It wouldn't be surprising to see this development take place now that AV is finally receiving a bit of needed-relief with its short and medium-haul fleet.

Further on, it would be even more feasible to see it happen if AV is granted rights to carry passengers on the domestic segments of the operation, namely PEI-BAQ-PEI. There is an absurd lack of flights between Colombia's Caribbean coast and the country's Coffee Region, and the whole southern part of the country for that matter. Sure, market sizes are certainly far from being large enough to support dedicated flights, but as a part of a bigger operation it sounds logical.

Like you correctly mention it, it's a matter of personal tastes. I for one would be thrilled to get a MD-83 over a 757, knowing that onboard the latter I would have more than double the chances to get crammed in a middle-seat.

OFFICIAL

That's right, so much for your skeptical views people...

AV officially launches its Barranquilla-New York City service on June 1st. The flight will be operated 4xweekly nonstop on MD-83 aircraft as rumored. The service will begin in BAQ though, and not in PEI, at least initially, contrary to most expactations.

The flights are already loaded into the company's official schedules:

AV0046 BAQ-JFK 2340-0530+1 M83 Eff. Jun01.06
AV0047 JFK-BAQ 1000-1350 M83 Eff. Jun02.06

BAQ will be the fourth station served from JFK with direct flights. Avianca additionally operates a daily 757-200ER on the JFK-MDE-CLO routw, and a daily 767-300ER on the JFK-BOG service. Great news.

Edit: Forgot to add the frequency.

Interesting to see they are going with this. Good luck on the route, it has potential.

In realted Avianca news, MIA-CTG will go to 3x weekly year-round starting in June, with a new Friday frequency. The flight will also be extended to PEI with same-plane service. The 2nd MIA-BOG frequency will also go from 5x weekly to 2x daily year-round in June. The dailies to BAQ, MDE, and CLO remain intact.

Great news for PEI (and the coffee region). Now direct flights to both JFK and MIA. As I understand them looking at Amadeus: PEI to JFK 4 x weekly via BAQ. PEI to MIA, 3 x weekly via CTG. Good for the coastal cities too with more frequencies to the US. Hopefully AV will be allowed to sell seats on the domestic legs too.

LAX and BCN are also on the reservation systems!

LAX 3 x weekly 767 non stop. Only drawback with this service is that it will operate overnight on the return flight, arriving at BOG at 0735. Fine for connections to UIO, CCS, PTY and even LIM as well as cities in Colombia, but not covenient for onwards flights to Brasil, Argentina and Chile. Great that it is non-stop though.

BCN appears as being served one weekly non-stop. With this new flights they are using up the third frequency allowed under the bilateral without a stop in the Canaries or ALC. That means that CLO-MAD remains at 2x weekly. For now anyway.

Amadeus shows the following schedules:

EFF Jun 01 2006:
AV46 MoWeFrSu MD83
PEI-BAQ 2110-2230 (1hr20min)
BAQ-JFK 2340-0530+1 (4hr50min)

AV47 MoTuThSa MD83
JFK-BAQ 1000-1350 (4hr50min)
BAQ-PEI 1450-1610 (1hr20min)

As I mentioned previously, this a long time to spend in an MD-83 (actually 7hrs20min door-to-door!) but I guess it's better than connecting in BOG.

Some suggested connections at BAQ to/from CTG (Cartagena):
CTG-BAQ-JFK, Aires33, 2115-2145 connecting to AV46 @ 2340, on MoSu.

JFK-BAQ-CTG, AV47, connecting to Aires32, 1520-1545 on Sa.

This new flight will also result in having THREE Avianca departures out of JFK within 3 hours: (AV43 to MDE-CLO @ 7:00am, AV21 to BOG @ 9:35am, and AV47 to BAQ-PEI @ 10:00am!)

Great news for PEI then. I based myself on schedules in Avianca.com, which yesterday showed the new BAQ-JFK service stopping in BAQ. But even better to see it clear that it does continue to Pereira. Good job.

well if the fares are such good as mostly, there will be some travellers for the routings using AV due the low price.
