How Safe Is Lagos For Aircrew?

Tue Feb 21, 2006 1:35 am

I have just been rostered a trip to Lagos (LOS). I'd be really grateful for any information regarding anything that one needs to be aware of. Particularly interested to hear from any British crews that have stayed there recently as well as any other aircrew. Forewarned is forearmed I guess. Particularly worried as we arrive and depart Lagos airport during the hours of darkness.

I have no current info, but rest assured that your company would not be sending their crews to Lagos if there was any doubt about safety!

When I was Cabin Crew in '61 and '62 on BOAC's Bristol Britannia 102s, we spent most of our flying life going up and down to Lagos at 16,000 ft, the then accepted FL for Britannias! Great fun!

Lagos was never that friendly, but we were able to walk around, even at night time, without being harassed, but gather times have changed. Enjoy your trip - it's the company that matters, and the beer is good!

If you want to be bored, ask me about the Christmas when I exchanged two Beatle wigs (yes, there were wigs that emulated the Beatles haircut) with the local Carsberg rep, for six cases of a dozen pint bottles of the good stuff. Trouble was, the deal was finalised on the crew bus as we were leaving the Lagos hotel, but would you believe, we experienced engine trouble in Kano, so had to make a nightstop . . . ! Merry Christmas!

Quite safe ... as long as you stay INSIDE your hotel. A decent hotel.
Nigeria in general and Lagos in particular are among the worst places , if not the worst, I've ever been.

When I lived there about 10 years ago, a lot of crews (including BA, AF and KL) stayed at the Shereton Hotel in Ikeja, about 15 minutes away from the airport. It was very nice and totally safe.

Yes, in both Abuja and Lagos KLM crews stay at the Sheraton. Kano crews stay in Abuja.
And the company's advice : stay IN the hotel!

A Briton was just kidnapped in the Delta while working for a Houston oil-company.

Lagos is better, but FYI.
