While other carriers are certainly an option I would think a fare more cost effective measure would be outsourcing to a third party like Dee Howard or Tramco.
Airlines often do not have excess capacity to handle off line maint. Some carriers are short of overall maint without any additional, HP, US, and DL come to mind. Others are very expensive and have some capacity but not enough to immediately absorb an additional 87 if AS or 150+ if AS and Horizon aircraft. These would be CO TW AA and NW. If they were smart they would spread the maint. work around based on location and fleet type.
