Boeing Says Development Of 787-8 On Track

Wed Feb 22, 2006 1:05 am

Out of Singapore:

The 787 is still ontrack for EIS in 2nd quarter 2008. Production to start in June 2006. 6 airplanes in the flight test program.

Apparently the writer thinks the 787 is an update of the 747!!! God I wish these idiot writers would get their facts straight!!!

"which is a larger and more fuel- efficient version of Boeing's 20-year-old 747-400 jumbo"

?? What?

Edit: I wasn't the first to catch that.

I think the writer was probably a fifth grader writing for his school newspaper.

The 787 going into production in June already. I hope and expect to see allot of photographs from the development.

The way Boeing has been touting the aircraft, I think they'll be releasing a lot of pics of 787 production of airplane 1.

Are the first set of test planes coming out in June 2006 or 2007?

They start to build the plane in June 2006 and I expect the process to be a bit slower than when they open up the production line.

Interestingly, Boeing will scaling up to production before certification is completed. The aircraft not used for testing will be stored awaiting certification and delivery. This is one of the strategies being used by Boeing to increase up-front production slots.

Interestingly, also, that Boeing yesterday claimed at Singapore Aerospace to now have more than 1,000 orders/options/proposals for the 787. Obviously, nowhere near all of these will turn into firm orders and the A350 will also be competing in a lot of these proposals, but the market for this segment is HUGE.

Very interesting and with some risk (not extreme, but some risk).

If Boeing delivers on time... that opens up the door to quite a few more orders (assuming the 2nd production line is started). IIRC European and American airlines are expected to begin ordering in 2007/2008.
