AMS-SEA VV. On KLM?

Wed Feb 22, 2006 11:48 am

Wondering if any of KLM employees out there know anything about KLM beginning service to Seattle in the fall 2006. They are to replace Northwest Airlines on the route using A330?
Possible KLM will drop YVR in facour of SEA for summer 2007 sched?

Interesting. This is the first I have heard of this. NW was flying DC10s between SEA and AMS for years and just recently switched to the A333 and then went to the A332 for the low season. Hopefully the reduction in capacity isn't a sign about the route not performing well but rather is a sign of the winter slowdown in international flights from SEA.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

Apparently it is loaded into the KLM res system for winter sched. Colleague noticed it in the system but sure if it is an error or Northwest flight with KLM code.

With NW being in financial fray, it sounds to be a logical move by KLM if they want to keep flying to the Pacific Northwest. I can't see why KLM couldn't serve both YVR and SEA. AS/QX will be able to feed traffic into KLM. Perhaps NW will have a codeshare with KLM. In other words, flip-flopping the metal.

What type aircraft is KLM planning to use on the SEA-AMS flights?

Yes...in fact, MP used to fly AMS-OAK-SEA-AMS with DC-10-30's and 767-300's, before MP flew nonstop OAK-AMS with 747-200's and 767-300's. I don't think MP ever flew MD-11's into OAK.

I think I have to agree with Wedgetail737... Why should KLM drop YVR if it were to take over the SEA operation?
I do think SEA yields are higher and that lots of pax connect out of SEA to the northwest.
But KLM has quite an established marketshare out of YVR (and smaller communities there) into the Middel East, Afrca and Europe. Plus a large ammount of former Dutch immigrants living in Canada.

I tried pulling up SEA-AMS schedules for November 2006 and they still reflect NWA flights from on the route.

why should they change from NW to KL?

I do not belive KLM would pull out of YVR as I know the route is performing very well and without a lot of competition...

I wonder if KL will fly the SEA-AMS route if NW pilots go on strike, which is a possibility in the coming week.

According to the NWA reservations system NWA is flying the route. I have done a check all the way up to 15 Jan of 2007. It is an NWA A330-200. NWA went to the A330-200 because of the range and that NRT is flown with a 332. So they can interchange them if they have too. In addition the NWA flight also has a KLM flight number. Maybe that is the confusion here?

I doubt it, KL has major technical problems with their aircraft and they have difficulties operating their own (reduced winter-!!)schedule. Today, again, 2 intercontinental flights were cancelled due to technical issues with the planes, KL605 AMS-SFO (MD11) and KL579 AMS-ABV-KAN (B767).

In fact NW is currently operating KL657 AMS-EWR (as NW63) untill March, to make sure KL will get its fleet in order.

That is not correct!
My father flew with a Martinair MD11 AMS-OAK in summer 1998!
And he returned with my sister a month later also in a MP MD11 (OAK-AMS).
I flew with my brother with a LH 744 FRA-SFO instead.

NW33, KL6033; in other words a KLM codeshare on a Northwest A330-200.

Flyingfool,
Yup! There are some KL-coded AS flights in the systems ex-SEA.

Avianca,
Trust me, YVR is doing THAT well. Loads are good, but mostly leisure travel : lower yields.
KLM is giving it another try by upgrading to MD11 (another reason is 767s leaving the fleet and lack of 332s), so let's keep our fingers crossed.

SK601,
You guys must be sooooo busy rebooking all those (angry) stranded passengers!
