SQ New Livery?

Wed Feb 22, 2006 5:55 pm

I was wondering when SQ will finally introduce a new livery Their colors look a bit antiquated by now, especially on the new A380. Anybody agree? For how long has SQ been flying in these colors btw?

Cheers

True, they could really use something smashing on that A380. But they would have thought of that themselves before the currently ongoing show, so I don't think it will happen. If it does maybe for the first aircraft?

no Big grin - although I have never liked the gold stripe that they added to the fin and to the cheat line a few years ago - only Singaporeans could put yellow and gold together in the same colour scheme and think that it looked good - if they went back to their original colours it would definitely be an improvement as far as I am concerned

with minor variations ( ie the yucky gold stripe and the typeface) it has been the same since they were formed when MSA split into Singapore Airlines and Malaysia Airlines System ( now Malaysia Airlines ) about 1970 IIRC.

lol, this has been discussed quite a bit recently. i agree, it could do with updating, and fot the A380 they did increase the size of the SQ titles. however, when it comes to image, SQ is quite a conservative airline, so dont look for any changes to the livery anytime soon. and if they did change the livery, dont expect anything radical. imo, if they havent done it with the introduction of the A380, they wont do it anytime soon.

Might well be. IMO that livery is just not adequate, not for a modern carrier like SQ. Nobody expects the airlines to change their liveries too frequently (like DL did), but adapting their outward appearances to the 21st century would definitely not be a mistake.

There was another conservative airline´s (KLM) livery upgrade a few years ago. After a few wild waves & try outs it was decided the tail had to stay as well as the blue top to retain consistancy during the transition period. The wide cheatlines were perceived seventies. We put a little red in the blue (warm) and luckely everyone seems happy with it. Perhaps SQ can find a similar smart compromise.

Gearup380, apparently no big change with SQ on the A380, and we'll have to see whether the new style titles will also be applied to their existing fleet or not.

But with the introduction of the A380, I'd expect to see some more adoptions or even changes of existing liveries among a number of customers. That bird is not an easy one to paint in a striking design, and some existing c/s look odd when you try to imagine them on a 380. Of course, just my personal 2c, but lets wait and see as the production line builds up steam.

Cheers, Lukas

I was thinking the same thing with the A380 photo. It does look a bit dated.

Personally I think that the SQ livery is great. It is instantly recognisable and fairly unique in terms of the colours used. As someone mentioned in an earlier post, SQ are a very traditional airline and you won't see major changes anytime soon I wouldn't imagine. Just look at their uniform, it's been around for decades, whereas other airlines have had to change several times. SQ have a fantastic onboard product, everybody knows that, so why change your livery when it is something that is already associated with style and quality.

The brand new Mercedes S-Class is also associated with style in quality, yet in 30 years this will have changed.
So as said, they shouldn't change the whole coloring or logo, they should find a way to make it look more modern, so you really have the impression to board new and modern aircraft. I think TG has a set a good example on that.

SQ has already established its familiar golden bird against blue background livery as a brand name in keeping with its quality service. Other than the size of the lettering on the A380, everything else has remained essentially the same.

You may think so , I think TG has shown how to take a classic elegant livery and make it look tacky as hell - hopefully SQ will look at it as an example of what not to do when updating their image

There are series of old liveries that are IMHO timeless classics. "Updating" for "updating's sake" makes no sense for the hell of it, or just novelty value. Just look at AC's new awful scheme!!!

... and imagine if Mercedes updated its Star to something else... no-one would accept it.

Classic schemes:

KLM - the *old* scheme (the new one is watered down)
SQ - current
Alitalia - current
AA - current
Thai - the old scheme
Vietnam airlines - the new scheme!

Any others...?

It's a classic livery and I think very little will cange. They might change the hue or thicken a stip or fade ebtween two blues on the tail but the core feel of the livery will not and should not ever change. My 2 cents.

In Singapore, there is an expression: "Kiasu"

It means to be driven to win at almost any cost....to be a Type A personality....to be almost larger than life.

A few years ago, a more Kiasu SQ tried out a few new designs. They did some very nice things for their 50th Anniversary; and then they outdid themselves with their two "Tropicals". The Tropicals were intended to highlight the airline's new interior finishes, fixtures and services.

But then there was the Taipei crash of SQ 006, which took out one of the two Tropicals: 9V-SPK.

Within hours the second aircraft, (9V-SPL was called back to Singapore and repainted. As far as I know, it never flew again comercially in the Tropical scheme after the crash.

It was almost as if the paint job had something to do with the crash.

My guess is that it will be a long time before SQ fiddles with their colors. Right now most Singaporeans would see it as the height of bad joss.

I agree with KiwiAndrew. Why do they have to completely change the livery? As long as the airline is doing fine and SQ does have nice results, there's no need for some drastic change. The bigger fonts on the A380 look like a nice addition and it is not the complete overhaul of their corporate image which, after all, isn't cheap at all.
