Infratil And WLG

Thu Feb 23, 2006 11:13 am

According to the Dominion Post yesterday pax numbers have fallen again at WLG.

I also noticed that the swanky new shops, paying swanky new rents, were seriously un-busy, I was there for 3 hours and didn't see a single sale go through at the Merino Wool shop, the booze shop was shut and the only roaring trade to be had was at the Book/Magazine shop and the CD shop, both of which have been there for yonks.

For all Infratil's hype and cool stickers on the waste-bins this "Wild at Heart" thing doesn't seem to be doing it.

What happens if it fails, do people at WLG get their money back from Infratil or is it classed as a success because that is how it will be "spun"?

Gee, what an unbelievable surprise!! Who would've thought as tame marketing scheme would do absolutely nothing for the airport, it's stores and passengers.

What then is the reason for the decline? Decreased govt. funded travel? Perhaps because of fewer major corporates in Wellington, with so many having moved to Auckland or Sydney.

Seriously who wants to go to Wellington to get blown away and fogged in?
Wellington is only on the map because it is the Capital. Theres nothing to do there on holiday.

There's a general downturn in Asian and SW Pacific traffic early this year. AKL has just reported it's first down quarter in ages.

It's not just WLG, and it's certainly not Infratil's fault.

Give Wellington a break, they're turning out one good movie after another down there these days.

Its not WLG's fault, its just that some people find the re-branding of an airport and unnecessary expense in a country like NZ where you don't have competition between airports, to fly to and from WLG you go to WLG (unless its fog-bound and then you end up in Palmy!) regardless of the brand ofthe airport.

NZ has a history of generic labelling, Nth Island, Sth Island, Cabbage Tree Swamp Drive, Deadhorse Lane etc, so funky titles that cost $$$$$$$$$"s seem like a waste of good beer money.

Yeah, Jafa, I'm sure there's some of that, but the numbers would have fallen regardless.

I've always sort of liked the town, though, even if the airport is "challenged" by land area, runway length, etc. The movie folks have surely put it on the map. And the arts festival is always great.

Let me guess, those streets are in Auckland

Add to that the cafe/dinning capital of NZ

Wouldn't really call it competition but Air2There.com fly to both Kapiti and WLG, about a 45 minute drive north

Deadhorse Lane is near Invercargill but CTSD is in AKL.

For those who have spent some time there, Wellington is a beautiful city, quite different from anywhere else in New Zealand. There are plenty of things "to do" - and very easily too - most Wellington "to do" spots are within walking distance of each other. It is a compact and very friendly laidback (like NZ flight attendants!) little smorgasborg of a city nested in soaring hills and a gorgeous harbour. On a windless day there is no clearer light and cleaner air in the world, even in the middle of the city. The city centre is a class above the neglected mess of downtown Auckland. However both AKL and CHC are better gateways to surrounding tourist spots - though WLG is a good staging post for a South (Main) Island holiday: start there and hop over (by ferry or plane) to the Marlborough Sounds and Golden Bay, then head south for the Southern Alps and the rest. Then fly out from CHC. Perhaps when the runway at WLG is upgraded to B777/787 standard, there might be more options into the place.

Well since your an aucklander (or as what the rest of NZ like to call Auckland, and what part of your username is, JAFA, I won't say how we say JAFAs), so you don't live in WLG then you don't know what nice days WLG does have, like today and yesterday for instance the harbour was like glass and the temp was above 25 degrees, but since the brainless guys at metservice decided to put the weather station beside Cook Strait (have no idea what drugs they were on when they decided that), then false weather reports are given.

It's OK dude, I jus' kidding, gotta hassle Wellingtonians and Aussies if you're a Jafa, they won't give you a Kiwi passport if you don't  Smile I spend a lot of time in WLG (all of this coming week in fact) and have had some choice days there but if, like me, you have to park round the back of the beehive and the charles fergusson building regularly you can end up with a stereotypical image of WLG weather, I once got blown past the door of the CF building, and I weigh 95 kilos!!

BTW, I wouldn't miss WLG landings for the world!
