QX To Start LAX-RDM

Fri Feb 24, 2006 6:52 am

"Horizon Air today announced it will offer new nonstop service from Los Angeles International Airport to Redmond/Bend in Central Oregon twice daily starting Aug. 1. The route is not currently operated by any other airline."

http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/060223/20060223005792.html?.v=1

They'll be using the Q400's on the route, 2:05 en route each way. That's gotta be one of the longest flights on a Dash anywhere.

With another QX flight in Los Angeles, and the others in the Southern California area. Will QX EVER open some sort of MX base in the LA area? Seems like a smart idea, then maybe they would not have to cancel so many flights out of the LA basin.

Also, From what I hear LAX terminal 3 is already stretched for gate space, will these additional flights have an impact on the Alaska operation in LAX?

TOLtommy: Don't pay attention to QX block time. That flight is more like 1:45. They have BOI-LAX blocked at 2:30, yet it takes 1:50 useally. This is an ongoing issue we have had with QX scheduling. The planes show up to early and never have a gate to go to. Flight 2389 from BOI at night averages 35 minutes a night for an open gate. Keep you informed.

Socalatc: No, they have talked about it. But there is no room for a base, crew or MX at LAX. AS crews use up all the room in the terminal. Now if we were to move, then maybe you could see a crew base. But as of 4 weeks ago, from a pilot (thought we take that with a grain of salt), they are not going to open a LAX base. They actually are starting a PDX-RNO flight, just so they can stop deadheading crews on AS after working the RNO-LAX trips.

QX has been flying to Redmond for years. About time they started pulling passengers from the south. As far as the MX base in LA? Won't happen. With their new MX hanger at PDX I don't think Horizon would put another MX hanger so close. But, times change and who knows what QX will do. They've done some wierd unexplainable things in the past... Big grin

AS739X

I was more referring to a Maintenance base.. I was wondering if QX will base some of their own parts and employees in the LA area to work on QX metal. From what I hear, when ever there is a small problem with a Horizon aircraft its more than likely going to be canceled because they have no parts or a mechanic who is not familiar with the DH4 or CRJ...

The last airline to make the LAX-RDM run was Reno Air...I think. Or was that SJC-RDM with MD-80's.

Not a huge surprise, and fills a nice gap in the list of cities served from RDM. As fast as the Redmond-Bend area is growing, I have no doubt that RDM will continue to see service levels increase, especially with the skiing available in the area.

Is UAX still flying EMB 120's on SFO-RDM? If so, I'm rather surprised they haven't bumped it up to RJ's.

Socalatc....I got ya. Well they are not going to have their own staff. They have contract MX here and I am sure they will stay with that. QX seems perfectly happy to run A/C 3-4 hours late (tonight being one of them). AS/QX has reduced staff in cities where both operate. So you won't see QX staff here since AS is well established.

Is QX getting more Q400s and if so how many and when do they take delivery?

Yes, we are. I'm not sure about the demand for RJ's. It seems MFR is a more popular destination since I've been around OO.

AS7379X,
What does QX do when a Horizon aircraft breaks in a Southern California airport and it requires a new part. Do they just cancel? Normally an airline would have their own stores department, or could borrow a part from another airline. However, since there are no other Q-400 operators in North America, and QX does not have any parts in Southern California, what do they do?

I think this is a good Idea for QX to take on. I am not a big fan of the Q400 but I believe this is a good move for now. Being up in the area not to long ago, I can see alot of travel going there. (My first reply as a member of Airliners.net  Big grin and new proud worker for QX)

QXatFAT- Welcome aboard. I've used the QX operation at FAT a couple times, its pretty well run. FAT is my favorite airport to fly in/out of in the central valley.
Surprising. I knew RDM had service to SFO, but 2x daily on the Q400 seems a little much. Up here at ACV we got 2x daily LAX service, but it is a triangular route going LAX-ACV-RDD-LAX-RDD-ACV-LAX (I think that's how it goes), and I would think there would be a bigger demand for ACV to have 2 independent flights than there would be from RDM. Even EUG has service to LAX, albeit on the triangular route with Medford. I would think that Eugene and Medford would have a bigger demand than RDM would. Then again, RDM is a resort area, and there seem to be alot of SoCal people up in Bend. I wish the best for QX on this route though.

Socalatc: Depends on the time of the flight. Any QX flight that mechanicals before 730-800p sometimes will be ok. Why, cause QX can get a mechanic and part on Alaska last PDX-LAX flight. But if one of the final 4 flights mechanicals during our 830-900 bank of flights, yes they cancel. There are no part here and only a contract mechanic. Useally QX will decide which out of the 4 final flights will effect the least amount of passengers that night and the day after. Flight 2448 LAX-RNO useally gets the shaft most often.

Copa, whats up my friend. Actually all QX flights start in remote city's. We dont have any that RON here at LAX. But you were close. Hoep all is well up north. Look for Modesto-LAX soon. Hear its close!

AS739X- If/When that MOD-LAX flight starts up, and I'm still in the relative area, I guarantee I'll be on that flight. That would be a huge boost to the MOD airport. Whenever I'm back in Mo-town, I drive by the airport and see an EMB-120 from QQ, and always wishing the QX Q400 would be there soon. Sounds like it will. Are you guys getting more planes? Last I heard you were pretty strapped as far as planes go. The AS/QX family is my favorite US airline too, so any new expansion is good news to me. Are you guys seeing any new routes into LAX besides MOD? have a good one man.

I think QX ordered 10 more aircraft last year. But I don't know when they plan to take delivery. Also, they are picking up two Q400's from Hainan Airlines and are at YEG for mods.

I like the Q400's a lot. I flew them on the SMF-BOI and PDX-SEA routes.

The OAK-Sun Valley route should be coming to an end in the next month or so. That should free up a Q400 for a little while.

It seems like QX is hitting all of the CA Central Valley airports. Would it be just a matter of time that they would start service to SCK, BFL and VIS?

Whatever happened to the prospects of flying to STS?

Ok...I'll stop asking.

EUG-LAX is about the same length. It was shorter in the -700, but now that they committed all of them pretty much to F9 exp., they won't ever see a jet in EUG again, I'll bet.

Well I figured some of that time was for LAX congestion. And make no mistake, I find a Dash much more comfortable than a ERJ/CRJ for anything over an hour. No complaint here. If I ever have the need to fly LAX-RDM, I'll book it!

I was told on Wednesday that we might be taking these aircraft here soon as early as late this year to early next year.

So what is the word on MOD then? Will MOD-LAX more than likely be a go, QXatFAT or AS739X?

Very curious as to the answer of this.  Smile
